Preview: Forest Green Rovers v Harriers
September 22
Winless Forest Green Rovers provide the test for Harriers this evening at The New Lawn, a venue that Harriers have yet to win at.
Both The New Lawn and Rovers' previous home, The Lawn, have been unhappy hunting grounds for Harriers. The Reds have yet to win a league game at Forest Green, managing three draws from six attempts including last season's visit that ended in a 2-2 draw with goals from Martin Brittain and Stefan Moore despite having both Justin Richards and Martin Riley sent-off. Draws are the most common outcomes from previous games, there have been seven in 13 meetings with Harriers winning just twice.
There could be changes to the team tonight from that which beat Gateshead at the weekend; Dean Bennett and John Finnigan both face fitness tests before the game; youngster Nathan Hayward stands by to make his first start for the club after impressing from the bench on Saturday. There is also the possibility that Robbie Matthews could feature after coming through yesterday's training session unharmed although it is unlikely that he will start.
Forest Green would be at the bottom of the league were it not for the penalty imposed upon Chester City. Rovers have yet to win and have drawn just four games from their opening 11. They have a new manager in David Hockaday who has made a number of changes to the squad including bringing in a new striker yesterday - Loren Maxwell - while releasing Ross Stearn. Maxwell could feature tonight if Sean Rigg is not fit while another new signing Chris Curran may make his first start for the club. Goalkeeper Terry Burton is available to the new manager for the first time after completing a three-match ban.
I expect Harriers to line-up as follows (4-3-1-2): Coleman; Courtney, Baker, Riley, Caines; McDermott, Hayward, Smikle; Knights; Barnes-Homer, McPhee.
Subs (from): Singh, Dolman, Hadley, Sharpe, Farrell, Costello, Matthews.
Missing (injured): Finnigan, Bennett.
The referee tonight is Andy Bennett from Devon. This will be his fourth Harriers game; last season he did the home defeat against Northwich while the season before he was in charge of the home win over Ebbsfleet and the FA Trophy draw at Weymouth.
Tonight's weather forecast suggests that it will be cloudy with a temperature around 17°C.
