Harriers opened their pre-season programme with a 1-1 draw at Midland Alliance club
Stratford Town which was no less than the home team deserved.
Ian Britton used the game as an opportunity to give almost all of his squad a run out, using all but two of his 20-man first team squad and also including a number of youth team players. The team that started the game was made up mostly of players who were generally on the fringes of the squad last season, with talented youngsters Scott Lower and Inderpaul Khela slotting comfortably into the defence. As was often the case last season, Harriers managed to create a number of chances without ever really looking like scoring. Daire Doyle had a couple of tame shots fielded by Warren Ayers in the Stratford goal, Ian Foster had a shot deflected along the goaline and came closest to scoring in the closing moments of the first half with a header straight into the arms of Ayers. By this time, however, Stratford had taken a surprise lead, hesitation in the centre of the Harriers defence left John Halford in a one-on-one situation with John Danby and he tucked the ball neatly past Danby and into the bottom corner. After the break Harriers made nine substitutions but still managed to dominate possession and create an even longer string of chances. The strike force of Drewe Broughton and Matt Lewis proved a handful for the home defence, Lewis saw two shots saved while Broughton headed over three times. Harriers drew level midway through the half, Bo Henriksen's pass found Lewis on the left and he slotted his shot inside the far post. Late on, after Dean Bennett had been withdrawn through injury, Nick Heath came on and created several opportunities with dangerous crosses from the right wing, the best chance saw Lewis and Broughton both jumping for the same cross with Lewis getting there first and heading against the post. Despite creating a dozen second-half chances to Stratford's one, Harriers could not find a winner and were forced to settle for a draw. |
