A makeshift Harriers side gave a professional performance to overcome the potential banana skin of an away tie at Unibond League side Matlock Town. Without several players due to injury, illness, suspension and ineligibility there was a debut for goalkeeper Jasbir Singh, a first start for Nathan Hayward and just a third start for Aaron Farrell. On a dreadful playing surface Harriers dominated possession but in a dour first half they couldn't overcome the dogged defending of the home side. An early opportunity was created by Farrell and Darryl Knights but, as happened more than once in the first half, the final shot, this time from Brian Smikle, was weak and easy for Arron Jameson in the home goal to gather. On the one occasion that Jameson was beaten Gavin Caines saw his effort come back off the post. After the break Harriers stepped up the tempo a little and soon threatened to break the deadlock. A Danny Andrew corner from the right was flapped at right under the crossbar by Jameson, the loose ball fell to Chris McPhee who blasted his shot high and wide. Just past the hour Smikle's pass along the left wing set Farrell away, his low cross to the far post found Robbie Matthews whose control let him down and he blasted his shot over the bar. Farrell was involved again when Harriers next went close to scoring; his left-wing run and cross picking out Hayward at the far post but he headed weakly at Jameson. The deadlock was finally broken fifteen minutes from the end; a through ball set Farrell up but the poor surface caused him to mis-control and snatch at his shot, the ball running to Matthews who despatched a 20-yard shot inside Jameson's left-hand post. In the closing minutes the home side tried their best to get an equaliser; with ten minutes left Liam King found himself in acres of space on the left but his low shot was easily saved by Singh at the foot of the post. After Farrell had created another opening for Smikle who saw his shot saved Mark Haran went close to grabbing an equaliser in stoppage time; nipping in front of Singh to rob him of the ball he lobbed his shot narrowly over the bar. Deep into stoppage time Harriers finally wrapped the game up; Farrell made another dangerous run into the penalty area only to be brought down by Jameson and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the penalty spot. Skipper McPhee stepped up to take the spot-kick and sent Jameson the wrong way to record his sixth goal of the season. |
