Match Report by St@tto

Harriers cruised to victory over struggling Grays at Aggborough to maintain the unbeaten start to Steve Burr's fledgling reign in charge of the team.

The new manager gave an early pointer to his managerial style making a number of changes to the side that had drawn with Crawley at the weekend.  Goalkeeper Jasbir Singh came in for his first Conference start, Dean Coleman dropped after making errors in the previous game; also making his first Conference start was Nathan Hayward while Aaron Farrell came in in attack.  There was a change of formation, too, with the 4-3-1-2 dropped in favour of something more akin to 4-3-3.

The visitors belied their lowly position in the league in the scrappy early stages of the game and gave Harriers little time to settle on the ball, playing very much in the style of their manager Julian Dicks.  Harriers eventually broke the deadlock, however, on 26 minutes with Brian Smikle firing in his eighth goal of the season via the post following Damian Spencer's knock down.

Within moments Harriers could have doubled their lead but Gavin Caines' 25-yard free-kick hit the defensive wall.  They didn't have to wait too long for the second goal, though, Hayward's low ball in from the left wing finding Spencer with his back to goal who turned well and swept in his first goal in Harriers colours.

Harriers were cruising now with the two-goal advantage but handed the visitors a lifeline nine minutes before the break when Martin Riley handled in the penalty area.  Jamie Guy, on loan from Colchester, took the penalty and sent Singh the wrong way to reduce the arrears.  A sweeping Harriers move in stoppage time could have brought a third goal but after Chris McPhee and Duane Courtney had combined to set Farrell away on the right Spencer was beaten to his cross by Billy Crowther.

Early in the second half Harriers restored their two-goal advantage; another good passing move led to Spencer feeding the ball to Smikle who rolled it into the path of Assistant-Manager John Finnigan who tucked a low shot past the the reach of Richard Martin to record his second goal in as many games.

Just before the hour mark Finnigan's crossfield pass found Farrell on the right wing, his excellent cross was asking to be buried in the back of the net but Spencer was beaten to it by Harlee Dean who headed out for a corner.  shortly afterwards the visitors failed to clear their lines again and McPhee knocked the ball down to the lively Smikle who jinked his way into the penalty area only to fire narrowly wide across the face of goal.

The fourth goal was not long in coming.  Smikle's cross was beaten down by the arm of Gavin Hoyte in the penalty area; skipper McPhee took the penalty with power ensuring that even though Martin got a hand on it it still found the back of the net to take his goal tally for the season to eight.

The game was comfortable for Harriers now but there was one brief scare for them when Dean found himself in acres of space and lofted the ball over singh only to see it crash back off the inside of the far post and Harriers were able to clear their lines.
