A goal in each half from Hull's Rodney Rowe put a dent in Harriers' promotion
challenge at Aggborough.
An open, entertaining game saw City's strong line-up start the better and look the most likely to open the scoring. Henrik Jorgenson miscued a clearance to the lively Rowe on twenty minutes and Harriers were saved by the quick reflexes of John Danby in goal who saved the striker's close range shot. Paul Robinson created the opening goal a couple of minutes later with a mazy run into the penalty area before pulling the ball back to Rowe who was left with an easy tap-in. Harriers were playing well in the approach to goal but were not creating many clear-cut chances. Tony Bird had the ball in the net shortly before half time bringing the ball down well with his chest before finishing with a powerful shot but the referee disallowed the attempt having seen a push by the striker on his marker. Early in the second half Rowe almost doubled the advantage, turning well to beat Lee Ayres but pulled his shot narrowly wide of the far post. Harriers created more in the second half and almost equalised when first when Bird created an opening for Andy Corbett but his shot was blocked and soon after Bird had a rasping 30 yard shot was well saved by Matt Glennon in the visitors' goal. The more experienced Hull side was able to soak up the Harriers pressure and always looked dangerous on the break with Robinson and Rowe causing problems throughout. Rowe almost doubled the lead late on when he wriggled into the penalty area but John Danby saved well at the foot of his left hand post. Harriers' best chance to equalise fell to substitute Gary Barnett in the closing minutes but when the ball came to him he could only steer it over the bar from six yards out. With Harriers pressing for an equaliser, it was Hull who scored a second goal in the last minute. The ball was played over the defence for Man-of-the-Match Rodney Rowe who held off his marker and tucked a shot into the bottom corner to wrap up the points. |
