Harriers reached their first cup final of the season with a victory
that was not as close as the scoreline suggests.
Playing down the slope on a muddy surface that made goood football difficult, Harriers soon set about creating chances straight away with Peter Faulds seeing an early shot saved by Hollingshead. Matt Lewis gave Harriers a sixth minute lead, running onto Andy Corbett's through ball holding off a defender and tucking his shot inside the far post. The home team felt that Harriers' second goal should not have been allowed to stand. Sam Shilton advanced from left back, exchanged passes with Daire Doyle and as he took the return ball Ledbury appealed in vain for an offside flag that never came and he took the ball around the keeper rolled the ball into the empty net. Ledbury pulled a goal back against the run of play, but had to thank Brendan Murphy for his part in the goal. Brown played an innocuous long ball which Murphy came out to clear but he kicked it against Preedy who was able to take it round him and slot it home from a narrow angle. Harriers soon restored the two goal advantage when Sam Shilton turned provider, his cross from the left was stabbed in by a stumbling Andy Ducros. Harriers created several more chances, Doyle and Corbett were both denied by Hollingshead who made aa string of saves to keep Ledbury in the game. After the break Harriers eased off and found goalscoring opportunities harder to come by. Ledbury didn't give up and on the hour found themseleves right back in the game, Brendan Murphy made a mess of another clearance kicking it straight at Ian Stewart who rolled it square to former Harriers youth team player Robbie Colwell and Ledbury's leading scorer had an easy finish rolling the ball into the empty net. Gradually Harriers' superior fitness began to tell and the scoring chances started to flow again. Sub Matt Reeves in particular was a thorn in Ledbury's side with half a dozen chances coming his way but he was unable to convert them. Ledbury gave Harriers a fright in stoppage time, Colwell broke free only to be stopped by a last ditch tackle. From the ensuing corner, Ledbury twice saw shots saved by Murphy and then the loose ball fell towards Colwell who steered it narrowly past the post. With this scare surived, Harriers held on for a deserved win progressing to the final where they will meet either Stourport or Bromsgrove. |
