Harriers kept up their promotion challenge with a comfortable win
over the league's whipping boys chesterfield at Saltergate.
Harriers introduced a number of trialists for the game and while they were taking time to settle in Chesterfield had their best spell of the game. The home side had the best of a fairly even first half, and only John Danby in fine form in the Harriers goal prevened tem from taking the lead. On 24 minutes he was called upon to save a diving header from Danny Walsh before Harriers had their first good chance when Andy Ducros' shot from Sam Shilton's cross was saved by Andy Richmond. Harriers took the lead soon after, Shilton again crossed from the left but this time Ducros' shot beat Richmond and found the bottom corner. Danby was in action again before the break, first an acrobatic diving save to his right to deny Danny Williams and then a fingertip saved when Roger Willis tried to lob him. After the break Chesterfield's performance began to deteriorate and on the hour mark the league's leakiest defence was breached again. Substitute Peter Faulds found himself in acres of space on the right and his low ball in to the near post was turned in by Andy Corbett. Within a minute Harriers were three up when trialist Ross Diamond hit a rasping shot past Richmond from 20 yards. Chesterfield's defence fell apart and Harriers were able to create chances for fun, Andy Ducros broke into the penalty area only to be brought down by Richmond as he went round him. Richmond was sent off and as The Spireites didn' thave a sub keeper, defender Jamie Hewitt went in goal, his first task was to pick the ball out of the net as Ben Davies' penalty made the score 4-0. The home side pulled a goal back after 72 minutes, Stephen Warne broke quickly on the right and his low cross was fired in by Craig Wilding. It only took Harriers two minutes to restore their four goal advantage, however, the offside trap was sprung open leaving Ben Davies in the clear and he beat Hewitt with a lob from the edge of the penalty area. Harriers could have had more, Andy Corbett missed a hat-trick of chances in the second half and Andy Ducros had chances to add to his tally also. Harriers remain second in the league with two games to play but third-placed Hull have an extra game in hand. |
