Wigan reserves lost their first game in nearly four months after blowing
a two-goal lead against Kidderminster.
A Paul Dalglish second-half double looked certain to clinch another vital three points for Chris Hutchings' charges and extend their unbeaten record to eight games. But a superb comeback from the visitors crushed Wigan and left them with much defensive work to practice in training. Latics had the better of the first half chances and could have hit the front after 20 minutes when Simon Haworth's lay-off fell kindly for Lee Ashcroft. But the striker hasn't figured in a match since mid-November through suspension and injury and the rust had clearly set in as his shot sliced wide of the target.  : Sam Shilton, son of England legend Peter, went close to opening the visitors account less than five minutes later after chasing a Lee Downs ball but his lob went over the bar. Haworth then created a great shooting chance for himself with a clever flick over the head of his marker leaving the goalmouth in his sights but his shot scuffed safely into the keeper's arms. Shilton again tested the Ryan Yeoman from distance but from then on it was all Wigan. Paul Dalglish chased a Haworth lob over the top but again the shot was fired straight at John Danby. Dalglish was given plenty more chances to find the net in a more open second period and the deadlock was broken on the hour mark. A great ball over the defence was played by David Moore and Dalglish stole in to chip Danby in a superb finish. He broke clear just moments later only to be denied by a great save from the keeper but, from the resulting corner, blasted a magnificent right-footed drive to the keeper's left to double Latics' lead. Harriers never looked well-beaten and deservedly fought their way back into the game as Andrew Corbett was brought down in the box and Mathew Lewis sent Yeoman the wrong way to slot the ball comfortably into the bottom corner. Haworth went close with an ambitious overhead volley from Moore's cross but it was Kidderminster who struck next, leveling the scores through a Tony Bird header after Yeoman had saved brilliantly from Peter Faulds.  : Wigan really should have regained the lead 10 minutes from full-time when Ahscroft went racing into the box but his shot and Haworth's rebound were both parried brilliantly by Danby and Haworth's second attempt was cleared off the line. The visitors' comeback was completed after 82 minutes when Lewis chased a Tony Bird through ball to beat Yeoman and hand Harriers a 3-2 win. |
