Match Report by St@tto

Harriers crashed out of the Worcestershire Senior Cup and lost their last chance of silverware for the season at the hands of a spirited Sutton Coldfield side.  Despite fielding a strong team with nine first team players and playing against a team who were without a goalkeeper for an hour Harriers were unable to impose themselves upon their visitors.

Sutton had a couple of early chances with former Harrier Mark Wolsey and Richie Gardner going close before the expected outcome began to take shape when Harriers took the lead after eleven minutes.  Town goalkeeper got himself in a tangle when trying to clear and Scott Rickards nipped in to steal the ball off him, his pull back found Adam Murray who scored with a well-placed shot into the top corner of the net.  Harriers were enjoying the best of the possession in the early stages and should have increased their advantage; Lee Jenkins created an opening for Jesper Christiansen who volleyed over the bar with an overhead kick and then a good passing move ended with captain for the night Graham Ward playing Jenkins in but the ball was too far ahead of the Welshman and Sutton cleared.  Young defender Chris McHale could have added to the score but his shot was straight at Justin Bray.

The visitors equalised in spectacular fashion; Garner found space on the left wing and his cross to the far post was met by Wolsey who lashed it into the roof of the net with a thunderous volley.

After the break it was the visitors who seemed more determined to win the tie but Harriers created more goalscoring chances.  Early in the period they should have regained the lead; Sean Parrish headed the ball down to Jenkins but his shot was blocked and soon afterwards Murray created an opening for Rickards but he shot tamely at Bray.  On the hour mark Sutton lost their goalkeeper when he was injured trying to clear and with no specialist substitute Wolsey took over between the posts.

Midway through the half the impressive McHale brought the ball out of defence to start the move that ended with Parrish getting into a good position in the penalty area but he was denied by a good saving tackle from Lucan Spittle.  Sutton were not completely overrun, though, Wolsey made a good catch to break down a Harriers attack and launch a counter; kevin Jones went on a surging run past three Harriers players before putting Naveed Arshad clear but he delayed his shot too long and was stopped by Abdou Sall.  As the game drew to a close and extra-time loomed it was the visitors who looked the most likely to score; Jones saw a header cleared off the line by Graham Ward and then Arshad went on a twisting run into the box but shot weakly at Brock.

The game went into extra time and Harriers had the first chance to score, Rickards got free on the right but his low cross was just too far ahead of Parrish.  At the other end Neil Watkins fired a 30-yard free kick over the wall and just wide.  Most of Harriers' best chances were now falling to Murray who tried his luck form long range a number of times without testing Wolsey.  Substitute Paul Bonar also tried his luck from distance but shot too high.  Sutton won the tie seven minutes from the end; the ball was played through on the left, Jones lifted his shot over the advancing Brock and despite the efforts of both Parrish and McHale Arshad managed to get to the ball first and force it over the line.  Harriers desperately tried to get back into the game, Sall was moved into attack, but it was all to no avail as they were unable to break sown the visitors who ecstatically greeted the final whistle.
