Harriers opened their Youth Alliance campaign with a well-deserved victory over Rushden & Diamonds that was far more comfortable than the scoreline suggests.

Fielding the bulk of last season's successful Under-18 side, Harriers included only two new faces: strikers Paul Oakey and John Douglas, and it was one of these who opened the scoring after just ten minutes.  The ball was crossed from deep on the right towards the far corner of the penalty area where Oakey turned inside his marker and tucked his shot into the bottom corner of the net.

At the other end John Danby was soon called into action, saving a long range shot and then blocking the follow-up from Jason Taylor.  Harriers were dominating possession, however, and could have increased the lead before the break.  John Douglas had a close range shot blocked that he didn't really connect with and Stuart Skitt fired one high and wide.

After the break the game continued in similar fashion, with Harriers outplaying their full-time hosts.  Harriers nearly doubled the lead on 58 minutes, Skitt attacked on the left and his chip to the far post was tipped away by Karl Daniels only as far as Douglas who turned the ball in only for his effort to be ruled out for offside.  Within a minute Oakey had called Daniels into action again, the keeper touching his shot onto the post.

With twenty minutes remaining the woodwork saved Diamonds again, Nick Heath got to the byline on the right and his cross was met by the head of substitute Richard Langford who crashed his header against the bar.  A good passing move two minutes from time ended with the ball in the possession of Heath but he struck his twenty yard shot wide.  Harriers had a late scare in stoppage time when Rushden were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the penalty area but the defensive wall stood firm and blocked the kick.
