Harriers' run of good form continued with a hard-fought victory over a Burton side that had beaten them less
than a month earlier.
The opening period of the game was quite scrappy and play was centred in the midfield area, Harriers were the first to threaten an opening goal after 19 minutes. Matt White struck a free kick that beat the . wall but was cleared off the line by Leon Dolman, the same defender was still in the right position to clear Danny Lennon's follow up shot. Lennon was not denied after 30 minutes, however, receiving the ball on the halfway line he turned well and out paced his marker in a straight sprint towards goal and then went round Richard Keeling to slot the ball into the net. The visitors never threatened Steven Parker in the Harriers goal for the remainder of a half littered with free kicks and the home team went into the break a goal up. Within two minutes of the restart Harriers doubled their advantage. Lennon picked up the ball on the right and beat three defenders as he twisted his way into the Burton penalty area before tucking his shot inside the near post. Minutes later White went close with another free kick, beating the wall but again he saw his shot cleared off the line. Chris McHale headed Harriers into a 3-0 lead on the hour, beating the offside trap and getting to White's lofted pass just before the onrushing Keeling. Harriers were playing like a team in form and could have had several more goals as they kept the visitors penned back in their own half. Shortly after the third goal Lennon wasted a golden opportunity shooting straight at Keeling instead of passing to the better placed Richard Langford. After 67 minutes Burton managed their first shot on target but Craig Smith shot weakly at Parker. At the other end Langford chased a long ball and got to it first and was able to take it round Keeling but somehow pulled his shot wide when faced with an open goal. With fifteen minutes remaining Harriers had the ball in the net, Liam Teraud heading in White's corner but he was penalised for a foul on the keeper. Burton substitute Dean Wellington, a former Harriers trialist, reduced the deficit with ten minutes remaining when he capitalised on a mistake by Harriers keeper Parker. Deceived by the bounce the keeper sliced his clearance straight at Wellington who had an easy task to roll the ball into the net. The visitors suddenly came to life and pressed for another goal forcing a series of corners and came close with a 20 yard shot from Bryan Barker that went narrowly wide. The Harriers defence stood firm, however, and held on for a deserved win. |
