Harriers booked themselves a semi-final trip to West Bromwich Albion after a hard fought win over Wellington in the League Cup. Playing their first game at Aggborough since early December they dominated the game but had to wait until the final twenty minutes before making the breakthrough that ultimately won the game.
It may have been very different, however, had James Dyke's dipping volley in the first minute found the net instead of crashing against the bar and away to safety. Harriers created a string of chances in the first half; Dyke was involved again with the next good chance, Aaron Farrell crossed low from the left and Dyke's first shot was saved but the fired the rebound over the bar. Shortly afterwards Carl Dudley did well on the right wing and pulled the ball back for Michael Xiourouppa but he also fired too high. Chances were also wasted by Farrell, Paul Bonar and Michael McGrath before the break and the teams went in at the interval all square.
After the break the visitors got into the game more, three minutes into the half a through ball from Jamie Cuss set Rob Parsons clear of the Harriers defence but he dragged his shot wide of the far post. At the other end a Dyke pass gave Farrell another opportunity but he was denied by a good save by Kyle Waring in the visitors' goal diving low to his left to push the shot away.
The game began to get scrappy as it wore on; Harriers had begun by creating a lot of chances that they would have felt themselves unlucky not to have converted, but, by midway through the second half the good chances had dried up and the best ones were falling to Wellington who were growing in confidence. Cory Hyde got away from the Harriers defence, beating the offside trap, but his shot was well saved by Bret Clowes and soon after a low hard-driven cross from Parsons from the right was turned onto the far post by Jo Arnold.
Harriers regained their control and took the lead twenty minutes from time; the ball was played out of defence by Michael McGrath to Farrell on the left wing who spun away from his marker and embarked on a long run towards goal cutting across the face of the penalty area before firing a shot into the top corner of the net. The game was wrapped up three minutes from the end when Simon Fitter picked up the ball on the right and lashed a shot inside the near post that gave Waring no chance. In the last minute Harriers almost made it three when a corner from the right was only half cleared and fell to Nathan Holloway on the edge of the penalty area and his volley was headed off the line by Will Perkins. |
