Harriers cruised into the Semi-Final of the Herefordshire Youth Cup with their biggest win of the season
against a Gloucester side that were completely unable to compete with them.
Just two minutes were on the clock when Harriers opened the scoring, Daniel Lennon breezed past two defenders to get to the byline and pulled the ball back across the face of goal to the far post where Daniel Bulmer waited to score with a simple tap in. Four minutes later the good start got even better, Bulmer sent over a tantalising cross from the left and David Stanbra got ahead of his marker to head past Alex Goode in the City goal. A neat exchange of passes cut through the visitors' defence after 20 minutes, Lennon turning the last man inside out with some good close control before slotting the ball into the bottom corner. The Gloucester defence was riddled with holes, and Harriers playing some of their best football of the season were able to create, and miss, chances at will. The fourth goal came in stoppage time at the end of the first half, Chris McHale turned in David Stanbra's mishit shot after a goalmouth scramble. The second half continued in the same fashion as the first, Harriers totally dominated play and could have scored a hatful more than they did. A Harriers counter-attack ten minutes into the second period saw the Gloucester defence disappear again leaving just one man facing three attackers. Lennon stood up well to the challenge of the lone defender, took the ball past the keeper and squared it for David Stanbra to tap in from close range. After Harriers had wasted more chances, Goode saving from Lennon and David Stanbra, Lennon went close to scoring a sixth but his lob hit the post with the keeper stranded. Nineteen minutes from the end, however, the sixth goal arrived, substitute Ben Rowland threaded a pass through the Gloucester backline for Matt White who tucked his shot under the keeper. Three goals in two minutes completed the rout. Lennon, who had been a constant danger all night and could have scored eight goals himself, had a shot saved by Goode but the loose ball ran to Rob Taylor who lashed a shot into the roof of the net from just inside the penalty area. From the kick-off Harriers won possession back and Lennon broke on the left in acres of space and slotted a shot past Goode and just inside the far post. Within a minute Lennon was rewarded with his hat-trick goal, beating Goode from fully 30 yards out with a shot that left the keeper rooted to the spot. |
