Harriers earned themselves a home quarter final tie with Highgate United after coming from behind to win a
thrilling cup tie at Aggborough.
It took just four minutes for Harriers to take the lead, as the ball was played through the outstretched foot of defender Sam Lloyd turned it past keeper Tom Llewellyn giving him no chance as he had moved to cover the initial through ball and was heading in completely the wrong direction. The visitors were soon level, however, Mark Hole's corner from the left found Danny Amies who rose highest to head it in of the far post. After their bright start Harriers were soon pegged back by the visitors who began to control the game for a while but it was the home team who next came close to scoring again. Luke Marcus got to the byline on the left and curled a shot just beyond the far post. Straight from the goal kick Wellington attacked and Rob Parsons found himself clear on goal but his twenty yard shot was saved by Craig Johnson in the Harriers goal. Johnson was called upon again six minutes before the break saving well from Mike Craig who created the chance for himself with a good turn and shot inside the penalty area. Wellington took the lead five minutes after the interval, Craig made an incisive run into the penalty area but took the ball too wide and fell over the dive of Johnson rather easily. The linesman saw it as a foul, though, and the referee awarded a penalty. Andy Williams stepped forward to take the kick and struck it just beyond the dive of Johnson inside the keeper's right-hand post. On the hour Michael Xiourouppa wasted a good opoortunity to bring the scores level shooting wildly over the bar when a pass to Daniel Lennon would have found the substitute unmarked at the far post in a much better position. The introduction of Lennon and Richard Langford early in the second half had sparked Harriers into life but they didn't have it all their own way, Wellington almost increased their lead on 65 minutes when an unchallenged Chris Jones headed wide at the far post from Craig's free kick from the right. Lennon created Harriers' equaliser shortly afterwards, beating two defenders on his way into the penalty area before pulling the ball back to Tom Willmore at the far post who steered it past Llewellyn. Harriers began to command the game now, playing with a lot more confidence and six minutes later took the lead. Simon Fitter whipped a free kick in from the left which was turned in by Carl Dudley from close range. Xiourouppa came close soon after but Llewellyn tipped his shot over from just under the crossbar. Five minutes from the end the game was settled when Dudley's pass set Nick Heath clear on goal and he completed the scoring with a perfectly judged chip over the onrushing keeper. Llewellyn was called upon several times in the closing minutes to keep the score down, Xiourouppa created a chance for Lennon but his shot was saved at the foot of the post and in the last minute he thwarted Lennon's attempt to duplicate Heath's goal. |
