Harriers kept up the pressure on league leaders West Brom with a comfortable, but narrow, win over bottom club Nuneaton. A goal in each half from Michael Xiourouppa was enough to win the game but Harriers should really have won by a greater margin.
The first goal arrived after just seven minutes, a free kick from the left wing found Liam Teraud at the far post, his header hit the post and ricocheted across the face of goal to Xiuorouppa who turned it in from close range. Teraud had another chance soon after; the visitors left him unmarked at the far post when Harriers had a corner on the left but he fired his shot into the side netting. Harriers continued to dominate possession but were unable to add to their lead despite the poor defending of the visiting team. Aaron Farrell should have doubled the advantage on the half hour, he broke into the penalty area on the left, held off his marker and then fired a shot into the side netting. The best piece of play in the first half came in stoppage time and it was Nuneaton's Lewis Malone who created it with a blistering 35-yard drive that was arrowing toward the top corner until Bret Clowes managed to tip it over the bar.
The second half was not much better in standard; Harriers wre the better team but allowed Borough too much of the ball, fortunately the visitors didn't have the creativity to do anything with it and rarely threatened to get back into the game. Farrell did the hard work to create the second Harriers goal; he got to the byline on the right and crossed low into the danger area, the ball was blocked but it ran only as far as Xiourouppa who drilled it into the bottom corner of the net.
As the game drew to a close Harriers had their best period of play, had they begun it earlier they would probably have won by a more convincing margin. Farrell had a number of chances, with twenty minutes left he hit a dipping drive from 20 yards the flew narrowly wide, shortly afterwards he hit the post as Harriers couter-attacked quickly after Clowes had saved well at the feet of William Cromwell. In hte closing minutes Farrel was involved again chasing a long ball down the right wing before playing it back to Jordan Blair whose cross evaded everybody in hte penalty area and only just missed going into the net at the far post. |
