Match Report by St@tto
Harriers began the defence of their Midland Floodlit Youth League title with an entertaining, incident packed victory over Atherstone United at Aggborough.

Despite there being a host of new faces in the team, Harriers began where they left off last season and needed just 36 seconds to open the scoring.  New captain Nick Heath swung a corner in dangerously from the left and defender Anthony Griffiths, under little pressure, headed into his own net.  Atherstone were very slow to start and Harriers were able to carve through the visitor's defence almost at will.  Richard Langford threaded a pass into the path of Terence Carpenter after eight minutes who managed to get a shot in even though he was being held back by his marker, Carl O'Neill in the Adders' goal was only able to parry it, however, and Nick Heath followed up to fire the ball into the net.

Atherstone's defending did not get any better and after 18 minutes Harriers were 3-0 ahead.  Another left-wing corner from Heath dropped dangerously into the goal mouth where Paul Gamble headed into his own net from close range while attempting to head over the bar to safety.  Harriers managed a fourth goal before the interval, Richard Langford broke clear on the right and made a good low cross towards the far post where Carpenter steered it just beyond the reach of O'Neill.

The "real" Atherstone must have arrived at half-time because they came out for the second period much more fired up and pulled a goal back after just twenty seconds.  Daniel Owen got to the byline on the right and pulled the ball back to Matthew Crabtree who fired in from close range at the far post.  Three minutes later the visitors had reduced the deficit further, Crabtree turned provider and broke away from his marker on the left and crossed low for the unmarked Lee Chapman to score.

It was now Harriers' defence that went to pieces and Owen went close again but was thwarted by Daniel O'Gorman in the Harriers goal.  Just after the hour mark Carpenter had a good chance to stretch the Harriers lead but chipped over from 20 yards out.  Eventually Harriers began to settle again and the game flowed from end to end and became quite competitive leading referee Thomas to take the names of Kevin Roeton and Nick Heath for tackles that were a little over-zealous in their execution.

Atherstone's resistance was finally broken fourteen minutes from the end, Langford found substitute Carl Dudley on the right who took on and beat Andrew Lancaster before firing a low shot inside O'Neill's near post.
