Harriers continued their recent improvement in form, recording their third win in five games - a run that
has included four clean sheets. They were helped by Rugby's misfortune, however, as the visitors were
reduced to ten men after just three minutes.
The visitors had only the bare eleven players to field a side, the only substitute that they named was not present, and after Tom Berwick limped off injured in the third minute they had to play the rest of the game a man short. They did not let it affect them too much and put up a spirited fight. By this time Harriers could have been ahead, Luke Marcus burst into the penalty area on the right and rattled a shot against the crossbar in the first minute. Twelve minutes in and Harriers had the ball in the net, Richard Langford turned it in from close range but was ruled offside. The first half was all Harriers but they could not make the breakthrough, too often shooting from long distance and not troubling David Hazel in the visitors' goal, Tom Willmore twice and James Dyke tried their luck from 20 yards or more from goal but shot over the bar each time. Marcus curled a shot wide of the far post just after the half hour mark but no other Harriers player was close enough to get a touch on it to turn it in. The first goal eventually came nine minutes before the interval, Scott Pearson floated a deep cross from the right to the far post where Marcus rose above his marker and headed over Hazel. A second goal almost arrived in the last minute of the half, a Rugby corner was cleared and a sweeping move saw Harriers attacking in seconds, Langford squared the ball into the path of Marcus but he dragged his shot wide from the edge of the penalty area. After the break the game continued in a similar fashion, Harriers created a string of chances that went begging, Langford blazed one over the bar within two minutes of the restart and Hazel made a number of saves to keep his team in the game. The visitors were almost reduced further in number six minutes into the half when Luke Pritchard limped off but after treatment on the sidelines he returned to the action but was pushed out onto the wing as he was unable to run very well. The second goal came on 54 minutes, Marcus got to the byline on the right and pulled the ball back to James Dyke who rifled a shot into the bottom corner of the net. Ten minutes later and Harriers were three up, Matt White cut in from the right wing and aimed a cross-shot towards the far post that evaded everybody and crept into the net. By now the result was not in doubt but Hazel made sure that Harriers did not run away with it saving from Tom Willmore, White and later on from sub Daniel Bulmer. The fourth goal did not arrive until nine minutes from time, White crossed from the right for David Stanbra who got up well at the near post to head in and then White added a fifth two minutes from the end with a well hit free kick from 25 yards that took a deflection on the way past Hazel who was left rooted to the spot. |
