Harriers suffered their first home of the season, and their first since February, following a lacklustre performance against a Barrow side who ended their own run of four straight defeats. Unchanged yet again, fielding the same starting line-up for the eighth game in a row, Harriers could have got off to an excellent start in the first minute; Justin Richards made a good break on the left, getting into the penalty area before crossing low for Brian Smikle who fired over the bar. Harriers were to rue that miss as the visitors took the lead in the fifth minute; Mark boyd's free-kick from 20 yards out beat the wall and squirmed through Adam Bartlett's grasp into the back of the net. The stiff breeze didn't help the quality of the game, although it should have helped Harriers who had it at their backs in the first half, nor did the play of the visitors who were determined to arrest the current slump and defended deep and often in great numbers. The game became very scrappy and there was next to no goalmouth action; the closest Harriers came to leveling the scores was in stoppage time when they forced a series of corners from one of which Martin Brittain's cross found the head of Luke Jones but he was unable to guide his header down and it flew over the bar. At the interval Harriers made changes, sacrificing wide men Brittain - who had been booked and was not having the best of games - and Brian Smikle and replacing them with Darryl Knights and Neil MacKenzie and switching to a diamond formation in the midfield. The substitutes injected a little more life into Harriers but The Reds were still lacklustre and huffed and puffed until midway through the half when Keith Lowe went close with a 20-yard effort. Barrow didn't spend the whole half defending; Luke Jones was forced into a last-ditch block to keep the visitors at bay and when the loose ball ran to Ashley Winn Bartlett made a good save to go some way towards making up for his earlier error. The closest that Harriers came to leveling the scores was a Richards free-kick from 20 yards out that hit the crossbar. Late on Richards crossed from the left for Knights who could only direct his header straight at Alan Martin in the Barrow goal; it was not to be Harriers' day. |
