Harriers slumped to their second home defeat of the season after a disappointing second-half performance saw them fail to capitalise on a lot of early possession and allow Eastbourne their first away win of the season. There were changes to the side that had lost at Tamworth on Bank Holiday Monday, Robbie Matthews and Kyle Hadley returned from injury and Martin Riley came back from suspension; John Finnigan, David McDermott and Tom Sharpe all dropped down to the bench. Harriers enjoyed greater possession than the visitors in the early stages but were unable to build on it and break the deadlock. They did have the ball in the net midway through the first half; Finnigan, on for Matthews who had broken down with injury after just 16 minutes, lofted a pass forward that was volleyed in on the turn by Matt Barnes-Homer only for the goal to be ruled out for offside. Shortly afterwards good work by Hadley on the right wing ended with him crossing for skipper Chris McPhee, now playing in attack, who saw his header tipped onto the crossbar by Borough keeper Michael Jordan, Lee Baker's follow-up shot was blocked. Against the run of play Eastbourne took the lead eight minutes before the break; Jamie Taylor jinked his way into the penalty area on the left and pulled the ball back to the near post where Nathan Crabb nipped in ahead of his marker to slot his shot past Dean Coleman. After the break substitute Finnigan was himself replaced by Aaron Farrell who made his home debut, Farrell had little luck, though, as Marc Pullan's greater experience allowed him to keep the rookie striker under control. After playing well in the first half, apart from the goal conceded, Harriers stopped playing in the second and could have gone further behind just before the hour mark; Simon Weatherstone's swerving long-range shot was well held by Coleman. Twenty minutes from the end Hadley set up Brian Smikle but he hit his 25-yard effort over the bar, one of few clear-cut chances that Harries created. It was at the other end where most of the goalmouth action was; Andy Atkin found himself in acres of space when receiving a low cross from the right but his shot was cleared off the line by Lee Baker. Shortly afterwards Atkin was denied again, this time his free-header from a left-wing corner was cleared off the line by McPhee. Harriers were still being pushed back late on and Coleman had to make a very good save to keep out Gary Elphick's header but in stoppage time he was powerless when a poor clearance went straight to Weatherstone who slipped the ball to Taylor who drilled a low shot past the keeper and into the far corner of the net. |
