A well taken goal by Neil Barrett was enough to snatch the points for York City and condemn Harriers to their fifth home defeat of the season. Unchanged Harriers will consider themselves unfortunate not to have taken something for the game, having enjoyed most of the possession and managed over twice as many shots at goal as their guests. Poor finishing and some really disappointing set-pieces let Harriers down, leaving them looking at a six-game winless streak - a manifestation of the curse of the Manager-of-the-Month award won by Steve Burr in February. Swirling wind and drizzly rain spoiled the game as a spectacle, particularly in the first half, and seem set to end in a dour goalless draw before even half an hour had passed. When Harriers did begin to get a handle on the weather and start to put some moves together most of the most dangerous moves came through Lee Baker on the left flank. Just past the half-hour mark his cross was headed across the face of goal by James Lawrie, and moments later he sent another great cross over that caught Robbie Matthews by surprise at the far post by missing out all of the defenders but he was slow to react and fired narrowly wide. Tom Sharpe also headed across the face of goal from a Darryl Knights corner as the half ended with neither side having managed a shot on target. After the break the wind dropped a little and allowed both teams to try to play a little more. The visitors should have taken the lead seven minutes after interval; a swift counter attack on the left flank ended with a low cross towards the far post where Paul Harsley was left in acres of space on the edge of the penalty area but his shot was well saved by Ross Atkins at the expense of a corner. A deep left-wing free-kick from Baker found the head of Matthews who should have done better than head straight at Michael Ingham in the City goal. The visitors broke the deadlock out of the blue on 67 minutes; Jamie Clarke crossed from the right to Barrett who hit a dipping volley on the turn that gave Atkins no chance. Shortly afterwards Harriers were awarded a free-kick just outside the penalty area but Baker's shot hit the wall, one of several such incidents - Matthews and Marc Goodfellow were also unable to get free-kicks past the wall. As the game entered its latter stages Harriers pressed forward in search of an equaliser; Ingham in the York goal made a number saves to keep them out, saving a snap-shot from Goodfellow, denying Chris McPhee twice tipping one shot over the bar and saving another low down. Harriers had a great chance with just seven minutes remaining; Goodfellow's free--kick from wide on the right found Matthews beyond the far post but despite having loads of time and space couldn't get his shot on target and directed the ball harmlessly across the face of goal. The defeat leaves Harriers ensconced in mid-table, sixteen points behind York who moved up into fourth place in the league. |
