Referee: Amy Fearn (Leicestershire) |
Harriers had to come from behind twice to earn a share of the points in a very dull end-of-season game against Hayes & Yeading a Church Road. Steve Burr changed the side around again as they faced their fifth game in eleven days, Chris McPhee, Darryl Knights and Brian Smikle all started in attack after coming off the bench to turn the game at Gateshead at the weekend. As at Gateshead Harriers' first half performance was poor with the players clearly getting weary from their packed schedule. Neither team managed to produce much good football and goalmouth incident was at a premium. The biggest talking point of the first half was the five-minute hold up to the game after the fourth official was inadvertently injured by Dean Bennett; after receiving treatment for some time he was unable to continue and an appeal to the crowd for a qualified referee led to one of the traveling Harriers fans taking over on the touchline. The home team took the lead in stoppage time at the end of the first half; Harriers failed to clear a corner after Tom Cadmore's header was blocked Scott Fitzgerald was quickest to react and fire in from close range. After the break Harriers needed just eight minutes to level the scores; Duane Courtney, on as a substitute for Tom Sharpe, crossed low from the right, McPhee's shot at the near post was blocked but he managed to hook in the rebound to record his third goal in two games and 12th goal of the season. Again goalmouth action was at a premium but midway through the half United regained the lead. Harriers failed to clear their lines again as the ball was played in from the left and Fitzgerald was on hand to fire in his second of the game with a well-taken volley from the edge of the penalty area. Ten minutes later the home team were reduced to ten men when Fitzgerald was shown his second yellow card of the night following an altercation with Luke Prosser who was also booked for his part in the incident. Within a minute Harriers had made the extra man advantage tell; Knights' right wing corner was met at the far post by the head of Martin Riley and sent looping over Clark Masters to level the scores and give the visitors a share of the points. |
