Match Report by St@tto

The curtain came down on Harriers' season with a draw at Mansfield that was a stereotypical game of two halves; abject defending saw them three down at the interval before a stirring second-half revival saw them go within a whisker of victory.

Harriers fell behind after 18 minutes; Jack Byrne gave possession away in midfield and a pass through the inside-left channel gave Jake Speight a clear run at goal before despatching a shot from just outside the penalty area past Dean Coleman who was making his first appearance since February following a groin injury.

Just seven minutes later the dangerous Speight doubled the advantage for The Stags; cutting in from the right wing into the penalty area he held off the challenge of Chris McPhee before tucking a shot inside the near post with Coleman diving in completely the wrong direction.  Coleman's afternoon got even worse a minute before the break when he failed to hold Speight's weakly hit toe-poked shot and allowed it to trickle over the line, completing the first hat-trick od Speight's career.

Harriers clearly had a rollicking from manager Steve Burr at half time and came out fired up, and in a new formation; Martin Riley came on for the ineffective Robbie Matthews with Chris McPhee moving up front alongside Darryl Knights in a 4-4-2 shape. Just six minutes of the new half were on the clock when Harriers managed a consolation goal; Dean Bennett gained possession in the middle of the park and sent a pass out to Brian Smikle on the left wing, his cross found Byrne in space at the far post who planted a firm header past Alan Marriott in the home goal to register his first goal in a Harriers shirt.

Three minutes later the game came to life as Harriers pulled another goal back.  John Finnigan won the ball in midfield and set Knights away with a defence splitting pass, Knights drilled the ball past Marriott from the edge of the penalty area.  Just before the hour Mansfield could have strengthened their position; Louis Briscoe's cross from the right found and unmarked Rob Duffy who headed wide of the far post.  At the other end Lee Baker flashed a 25-yard drive across the face of goal as Harriers pressed for an equaliser with their tails now up.

Baker turned provide on 71 minutes, his cross from deep on the left found Byrne who got in front of his marker but could only direct his shot straight at Marriott.  The equaliser came three minutes later; a good passing move involving several Harriers players ended with Baker clipping the ball toward the edge of the penalty area where it was headed back out by Knights to McPhee who hit a looping 25-yard volley into the top corner of the goal leaving Marriott motionless as it flew past him.

Both side pressed for a winner; Knights set up Lloyd Kerry who should have done better with his 20-yard shot but he hit it straight at the 'keeper who made an easy save.  Mansfield came close when the broke away following a Harriers corner, Steven Istead winning the ball from Duane Courtney and passing to Speight on the right; his shot was saved by Coleman at the expense of a corner from which Matt Somner hit a shot that Coleman did well to keep out.  Harriers' last decent chance for a winner fell to Marc Goodfellow but his shot was saved by Marriott.
