A goal inside the last ten minutes snatched what would have been Harriers' first win of the season away from them. Gurjit Singh's second goal of the season, on his first start, had given Harriers the lead midway through the first half but Ryan Bowman's goal seven minutes from the end - the seventh goal Harriers have conceded in the last ten minutes of a half this season - gave Gateshead a share of the points and left Harriers still ins search of their first win. With Reece Styche suspended Singh was brought in to the starting line-up for the first time and partnered Aman Verma in attack in a 4-2-4 formation. Harriers played well from the start, passing the ball around confidently but were given an early scare when the lively Josh Gillies jinked his way into the penalty area after just five minutes but shot straight at keeper Alex Palmer who was making his Harriers debut. Harriers looked threatening in attack and nearly took the lead on 25 minutes; Adam Dawson's pass from the right was dummied by Luke Maxwell and ran to Andre Wright on the left but his shot from the edge of the penalty area ws weak and straight at Sam Russell in the home goal. The opening goal came moments later; Dawson again the instigator, his pass found Singh 25 yards out who hit a low shot into the bottom corner of Russell's net. Andrew Fox went close to doubling the advantage before the celebrations had died down but his shot was saved by Russell. At the end of the half Harriers had another opportunity to increase their lead, Singh finding Jared Hodgkiss on the right but his low cross was blocked before Verma could turn it in. Gillies was a constant threat on the Gateshead right and he had chances to get his side back into the game early in the second half; cutting in from the right and shooting from the edge of the penalty area his effort was blocked by Maxwell, and getting to the byline on the left before pulling the ball back to Bowman who saw his shot saved by Palmer. Late on Maxwell almost caught out Russell with a cross-cum-shot from deep on the left wing that the keeper had to tip over the bar for a corner. Next Verma set up Tahvon Campbell on the left who cut in to the penalty area but sot over the bar. The equaliser came for the home team through the build up play of Gillies who again got to the byline on the left and pulled the ball back to the near post where Bowman was on hand to guide it past Palmer to level the scores. |
