Harriers cruised into the Area Quarter-Finals of the LDV Vans Trophy with an excellent performance at York Street that their higher-graded hosts could not cope with. Stuart Watkiss made only one change to the team that had drawn 0-0 with York in their previous game, Wayne Hatswell returned from suspension with Terry Fleming being rested. The youthful midfield remained with Marc Pugh, Russ Penn and Simon Heslop controlling the game. Surprisingly, Taiwo Atieno was in the team after Walsall relented and allowed him to play and he partnered leading scorer Iyseden Christie, who was the subject of transfer speculation in the press before the game, in attack. The freezing conditions and bone-hard pitch made the early stages of the game scrappy and it was the home team who should have scored first midway through the half. A corner from the right was not cleared properly, Harriers had a number of chances to clear in fact, and when the ball was played back in from the right Noel Whelan was unmarked at the far post but volleyed wide. Harriers then took control of the game and took the lead after 25 minutes; Michael Blackwood saw his 25-yard shot parried by Nathan Abbey in the Pilgrims' goal and Christie was on hand to pounce on the loose ball and fire in his seventh goal of the season. Shortly afterwards a long clearance from Daniel Lewis beat the Boston defence and Christie raced through to clip the ball past Abbey and double the advantage. The traveling support was in dreamland by now but the night was to get better before the break as Blackwood had the luck go in his favour shortly before the end of the half; picking the ball up on the left wing he cut inside and hit a dipping shot over Abbey into the far corner of the net to register his first goal for the club. At the interval United made a triple substitution, bringing on some more senior players, in the hope of getting themselves back into the game but it was Harriers who continued to dominate the game. Early in the second half Hatswell went close to adding a fourth, getting on the end of a Heslop free kick from the right but could only direct the ball straight at Abbey. When United did attack the luck was not on their side; Jason Lee hit a shot from distance that Lewis did well to parry and when the loose ball ballooned up in front of Lawrie Dudfield his header look certain to find the net but Lewis picked himself up to save again. Pugh and Penn were lively throughout with the latter looking far more experienced than a player making just the second senior appearance of his career; the two of them combined to create an opening for Heslop but just as he was winding up to fire Penn's cross home Brad Maylett arrived to clear up the danger. At the other end Lewis was called into action again midway through the half when he dived to his right to push Ian Ross' 25-yard free-kick around the post for a corner. Harriers continued to create the best chances; a mazy run by Blackwood left defenders trailing in his wake, his low cross to the far post was knocked back by Pugh to Penn whose shot was blocked by Paul Ellender. Boston did manage to get the ball in the net; Maylett's cross from the right was headed in by Dudfield but the goal was ruled out as the boston man had fouled Daryl Burgess in the process. Harriers went straight back up the other end, Johnny Mullins carrying the ball forward before feeding it to Christie who went down under the challenge of Ellender but the referee waved play on. Mullins was involved again in the last action of the game; Simon Rusk lifted the ball over Lewis but the young defender was back on the line to clear. |
