Match Report |
Kidderminster still search for their first ever win in the Worthington
Cup, but gave First Division Preston a great fright before finally
succumbing in extra-time.
Preston were the first to show any attacking intent, with Anderson forcing a save from Brock, but after the opening flurry, Kidderminster took control. Broughton had a tenth minute goal ruled out as he had strayed offside in the build up. Six minutes later Bird picked up the ball near half-way and ran through the heart of the visiting defence before planting his shot past Lucas. Soon afterwards Bird headed against the post, and in the 37th minute he doubled the lead. Davies looped a cross over from the left, Preston couldn't clear and Bird lashed his shot in at the far post. At this stage, to the neutral observer it was Kidderminster who looked like a First Division side. After the break Preston came out fired up and were immediately on the attack. Healy, Anderson and Macken all had chances which Brock was equal to. The attacks came in waves and it was inevitable that a goal would come. With less than fifteen mminute remaining, Keane's pass sprung the offside trap and Macken raced clear and tucked his shot inside the near post. Five minutes later Preston were level, Brock mad a great save to keep out Macken's shot and then parried Healy's follow-up into the path of Gallagher, his effort he pushed onto the crossbar but could not prevent it crossing the line. The game moved into extra-time and Macken hit the crossbar with a shot before Jackson powered through a crowded penalty area to head in a right wing corner for the winner. Kidderminster continued to battle, but were unable to find an equaliser as Preston held on to win. |
