Harriers came away from Glanford Park with a point for the first time
but will consider it two points dropped rather than one gained.
Scunthorpe started the bright as Harriers lined up in a different
formation again, Sam Shilton coming into the side as a wing-back
with Craig Hinton on the other flank and both new signings coming
in for their debuts. While Harriers were coming to grips with
their new line-up their hosts were having their best spell of the
game and were first to threaten a goal with a 20 yard effort from
Alex Calvo-Garcia that Stuart Brock did well to get down to.
Gradually Harriers began to exert themselves and were playing some good
football with both new players settling in quickly. Rather than
sitting back and soaking up pressure as they have done in recent away games,
they attcked whenever possible, clearly looking to get more than one
point from the game. The first good chance for the visitors
came eight minutes before the interval when Bo Henriksen crossed low from
the left, Sean Flynn couldn't connect with it and it ran to the far
post where Hinton shot but hit the post.
The breakthrough came in stoppage time at the end of the half, Hinton
crossed from the right and Shilton at the far post stabbed the ball home
for his first league goal in a Harriers shirt.
After the break Harriers continued to press, looking for a second goal rather
than sitting on what they had. Debutant defender Mark Clyde almost
doubled the advantage after 57 minutes but his snap shot was well saved
by Tom Evans in the Iron goal. Seven minutes later Stephen Wright
went close for United, his 30 yard free-kick well saved by Brock,
and then almost straight away Danny Williams had a good chance for Harriers
at the other end but shot over.
With twenty minutes remaining Scunthorpe drew level with a goal out of
the blue. Wayne Graves had a shot blocked and the loose ball ran to
Scott Brough 25 yards out on the left and he struck a perfectly judged shot into
the far top corner beyond the reach of Brock. The goal sparked
the home team into life and shortly afterwards they almost snatched an
undeserved lead when a corner from the left was not properly cleared by
Lee Ayres and Alex Calvo-Garcia blasted over.
Harriers kept on looking for a winner and came close to finding it in the
dying minutes when substitute Ian Foster shot over and they had to
settle for just one point.
