Match Report by St@tto |
Harriers kept their play-off hopes alive with a well-earned victory over Southend United who still have
yet to win a point at Aggborough.
The early stages of the game were wide open play flowed from end to end but neither side threatened to open the scoring. The first good chance went the way of the home team after 21 minutes, Sean Flynn played Drewe Broughton in but his first touch was poor and he was forced out wide and shot weakly at Darryl Flahavan in the Shrimpers goal. At the other end Tes Bramble went close two minutes later, wriggling through the Harriers defence before shooting over the bar. A long run out of defence by JJ Melligan brought the home crowd to its' feet but he ended it with a poor shot that sailed over the crossbar and ten minutes before the break a right wing cross by Adie Smith found Broughton unmarked at the far post but he headed over when he should have done better. Early in the second half the visitors came close twice in as many minutes when they forced a series of corners, first Dominic Foley headed wide at the near post from a right wing corner and then from the opposite side Steven Kelley headed straight at Fraser Digby. Melligan created the best chance of the game so far after an hour, his left wing corner found the head of Flynn but he headed it straight at Flahavan. Soon afterwards good work by Danny Williams set up an opening for Melligan but the midfielder shot over the bar. The goal came fifteen minutes from the end, the ball was played through the centre of the Southend defence to Melligan who lifted a perfectly judged lob over the advancing keeper from just inside the penalty area. Southend almost drew level in the closing minutes when Bramble's shot was turned round the post for a corner by Digby. From the resulting corner, the ball fell to Danny Marney at the far post but somehow he screwed his shot wide with the goal at his mercy and the game was lost. |
