Match Report by St@tto |
Suicidal defending from Harriers cost them victory in an entertaining game against league leaders Hartlepool
after they had held an early two goal lead.
Harriers played some of their best football in weeks in the first half, Hartlepool were never allowed to settle as the home team attacked in waves. However, it was the visitors who were first to come close to scoring, Paul Smith beat Adie Smith on the left and crossed low to the far post but Darrel Clarke hit a weak shot straight at Stuart Brock. Immediately Harriers responded, Bo Henriksen got free on the right and his cross found Andy Bishop who drove his shot against the underside of the crossbar and it bounced down and away to safety. Hartlepool had another good chance after 21 minutes, Brock came for a cross that he couldn't reach and the ball fell to Richie Humphreys who headed over. The opening goal came on 22 minutes, Sam Shilton jinked his way into the penalty area and selflessly passed to Bishop, his mis-hit shot beat Anthony Williams in the Hartlepool goal and trickled towards the line but Henriksen followed up to make sure it went in, recording his nineteenth goal of the season. Five minutes later the home team doubled their advantage, the ball was played long to Bishop who flicked it over his marker and then ran round him and lashed a vicious shot into the far corner that gave Williams no chance. On the stroke of half time Henriksen had a chance to wrap the game up, Chris Westwood tried to head a cross clear but could only direct the ball into the path of the Danish striker but he shot straight at Williams when he had time to do better. After the break the visitors improved and stopped Harriers from playing the flowing football that they had done in the first half. Sloppy defending by the home team led to United's first goal after 62 minutes, a free kick from the right was flicked on by Westwood to the far post where an unmarked Clarke was able to volley it home from close range. Four minutes later they almost drew level when the Harriers defence went missing leaving Mark Tinkler unmarked but Brock did well to save his shot with his legs. At the other end Shilton got to the byline on the left and crossed to the near post for Bishop but the youngster shot over. As the game headed to a close Hartlepool pressed for an equaliser and Brock was called upon to keep out efforts from Graeme Lee and Eifion Williams. In the last minute Harriers had the opportunity to finish the game, JJ Melligan crossed from the right to the far post but substitute Drewe Broughton headed tamely at Williams. The referee found four minutes of stoppages to add on and in the very last one disaster struck for the home team, Hartlepool played the ball long and Dion Scott trying to direct it back to Brock instead of clearing it only succeeded in playing it to the feet of Eifion Williams who slotted it under Brock to give the visitors a point that they barely deserved. |
