Match Report by St@tto

Harriers made it through to the last eight of the FA Trophy, and a date with Halifax Town, but not before being given a scare by Conference South side Braintree Town.

Russ Penn made a welcome return to the side following suspension, with Brian Smikle dropping down to the bench to make way.  Unfortunately for Harriers, Penn's return didn't provide much more of the impetus that had been missing in the first meeting of the sides three days earlier and they didn't take control of the game as they should have done.

On their own, compact, ground with a bone-hard frosty pitch Braintree were slightly more adventurous than they had been at Aggborough and created a few openings for themselves in the opening exchanges without really threatening Scott Bevan in the Harriers goal.  It was half an hour before Harriers created a really good chance, Jonny Harkness' free-kick was played back into the penalty area by Simon Russell to Andy White who knocked it on to Mark Creighton only for his shot to be charged down.  Two minutes before the break Braintree took the lead when Bertie Brayley's cross from the left found Russ Edwards 20 yards out who lashed a volley past Bevan.

After the break Harriers returned with the manager's words ringing in their ears and went close to an equaliser when Harkness' free-kick from midfield was knocked down by Creighton to Penn who blasted his shot over the bar.  At the other end a crossfield pass from the left found Robbie Martin who hit a 25-yard effort just over the bar.

The game was turned on its head after 70 minutes; a deep cross from the right by Russell was knocked back across goal by White to Michael Blackwood who turned it in from close range to level the scores.  Less than three minutes later Harriers were ahead; a quickly taken free kick found Blackwood in the inside-left channel, his shot from a narrow angle took a deflection off Ollie Adedeji and James Constable knocked it over the line from a couple of inches out for his tenth goal of the season.  Ninety seconds later as Harriers attacked again White picked out Russell in acres of space on the right and he drilled a shot past Nick Morgan in the home goal to make the result safe.

In the closing minutes substitute Luke Reynolds could have piled on more misery for the home team when he cut inside from the left but his low shot to the near post was saved by Morgan.  Town had one last chance at the death; Brad Quinton received a cross from the left but his shot was straight at Bevan who pushed it away for a corner.
