Match Report by St@tto

A solid performance by harriers saw them get back to winning ways with a single-goal victory over Rushden at Nene Park, the fifth game in a row that they have prevented Rushden from scoring in.

Andy Ferrell returned to the starting line-up for the first time since the opening day of the season in place of Brian smikle in the only change to the team that had lost the previous game against Stevenage Borough.  Rushden included former Harrier Wayne Hatswell.

Harriers had the best of a scrappy first half after surviving an early scare when Chris Hope's free-kick went narrowly over the crossbar.  The visitors created a string of chances; a deep cross from the left by Jonny Harkness found Russ Penn arriving late at the far post but he headed wide and a low cross by Michael Blackwood just evaded the run of an unmarked justin Richards.  Gavin Hurren's pass through the inside-right channel picked out James Constable who sw his shot deflected onto the crossbar.

At the other end Rushden were mostly kept at bay but did, on occasion, get through.  Penn's missed clearance allowed Dean Howell to cross from the left for Simeon Jackson but he blasted over the bar from inside the penalty area.  Harriers continued to create and Richards went close with a shot that arrowed across the face of goal after he had created the space for himself to get the shot in on the edge of the penalty area.  Shortly before the break Harkness drew a save from Paul Bastock in the home goal with a low free-kick from 20 yards out; moments later he had another opportunity from slightly further from goal and was unfortunate to see his shot drop just over the bar.

Early in the second half Harkness got even closer, his 25-yard free-kick beat the wall and Bastock and then cannoned back off the bar.  Rushden were kept out of the game even more in the second period and their best chances were restricted to long-range efforts such as tom Shaw's 30-yarder straight at Scott Bevan after Stuart Whitehead had made a poor clearance.

Harriers took the lead on the hour; Harkness dinked the ball over the rushden wing-back Curtis Osano for constable who sent over a fantastic cross to the far post where Penn had ghosted in and met the ball with a diving header to register his first goal of the season.  Richards could have doubled the advantage a couple of minutes later when he found space in the penalty area but headed Blackwood's cross straight at Bastock. Harriers had their tails up now and came at Rushden even more, Richards missed another good chance after a sweeping move that had seen Penn carry the ball forward on the right before slipping it inside to Constable who helped it on to the opposite flank for Richards who cut in and shot shot wide of the far post.

For all of the possession, however, Harriers were not able to build upon their lead and had to be content with just a single-goal victory and their first clean sheet of the season.
