Harriers disappointingly dropped two points drawing a game that they should have
won on their first visit to Oxford's Kassam Stadium.
An open, entertaining game saw Harriers soak up a lot of pressure from the home team before deservedly taking a lead which they were ultimately unable to hold on to. Former Oxford target Drewe Broughton was the first to threaten to open the scoring after 25 minutes when he just failed to make a proper contact to Ian Foster's cross and directed his header well wide. A minute late the action switched to the other end and veteran striker Paul Moody directed a shot against the post with Stuart Brock beaten, the first of a number of times that the home team were to find the frame of the goal. Oxford had the best of the chances through the rest of the first half, Andy Scott twice had shots saved by Brock. Harriers were causing problems for the home defence, Foster put a number of dangerous crosses into the goal area, but none of his colleagues were decisive enough to attack the ball and turn them into goalscoring chances or make Andy Woodman in the home goal work. After the break Harriers had to weather another early storm from the home side but soon began to get on top. However, again the were making good approach play but lacked the killer instinct in the danger area. At the other end a deep cross shot from Paul Powell almost caught out Brock and hit the far post and Andy Crosby also went close. Harriers eventually took the lead, a quickly taken free-kick left Colin Larkin with a free run at goal, he took on and beat Woodman but his weak shot was blocked on the line. Drewe Broughton following up in support was first to the loose ball and stabbed it into the net. Ian Atkins made a tactical switch in an attempt to get his Oxford team back into the game, changing from 4-4-2 to 4-3-3. The increased pressure paid off for them, as the ball was played in from the left it was again helped onto the crossbar and in the confusion that ensued substitute Jamie Brooks followed up to sweep the ball home. The home team stepped up the pressure for a late onslaught which had Harriers hanging on to the point for a spell, but as the game drew to a close Harriers created chances to have won the game. Tony Bird, on for the flagging Larkin, joined Foster in crossing dangerously but again the rest of the strikers didn't attack the ball and the home defence was able to clear to safety. |
