Molby A Happy Man
October 18
It was a happy Jan Molby who faced the press after Saturday's dramatic last-gasp victory over high-flying Scunthorpe United at Aggborough.
Despite being unable to field a complete squad of fit players – two of the sixteen were injured – and goal-scoring hero Ian Foster playing against the advice of a specialist who told him to rest his injured knee, Harriers gave one of their best performances of the season and their reaction to the defeat at Lincoln left Molby delighted, he said, “We did have a few [injury] problems, but last week at Lincoln the players were lambasted for not giving their all, and rightfully so – but that hasn't been the case today. It was a decent result and a good performance.”
The game ebbed and flowed with Harriers twice coming from behind, something that they have not managed to do so far this season. The first Scunthorpe goal was a very poor one from a Harriers point of view but the boss was pleased with the way the players kept their heads up and fought back, “The reaction was good. It was a disappointing goal but the reaction was the right one. The equaliser was perhaps a little but lucky but if you don't shoot, you're never going to score. Foster came to see me yesterday and said he'd been told to rest for a week. I told him that rest will begin on Sunday. He'll have to rest for a week now if he's to have a chance of playing in our next game but he was out there battling for us today.” Foster said, “It hurt but the doctor said I wouldn't suffer any structural damage.”
Molby felt that the thrilling outcome to the game will lift morale around the club, “It was a hell of an afternoon and the most excitement we have seen for a long, long time. Scunthorpe are an excellent side and the best team I have seen in this league all season, so to beat them under the circumstances was great. It's given everyone a lift. For once fans weren't leaving early, and those who tried to were caught by the winner! So it was good to have them clapping at the end; the dressing room is bouncing as you can imagine. We're off the bottom now and I've always said that's psychologically important. The challenge for the players is to try and maintain a consistent level. That's not to win every game, but it's to maintain a level that is acceptable in training and in matches. If we do, we'll make progress, I guarantee that. Last week was rock bottom and when you hit rock bottom you can only improve. The easiest way to improve is by showing effort and we put an awful lot of effort in. It was a test of character right from the start after Lincoln. We twice came from behind. When we equalised everyone was thinking "It's 2-2, let's hold on for a point." But we still showed desire to go forward with so many young players. We're off the bottom which, psychologically, is very important. We've got tough games now against Bristol Rovers and Chester but a win, and a good win like this can only give you confidence.”
By next weekend Harriers could also add Iyseden Christie to the squad, Molby said, “Christie will crack on this week with training and fitness work. Being on the bench this Saturday is the minimum requirement. He's happy with that and said: "If you need me, pick me Saturday." But I'm also looking to try and bring someone else in.”
Match-winner Kelvin Langmead was delighted to finally get his first goal for the club, “It was a team effort but obviously, individually I'm very happy to have scored the winner,” he said, “It was definitely a great feeling. It was a little more difficult than I expected but sometimes you just have to hit and hope. I just thought I'd hit the target and luckily for me it hit the back of the net. Hopefully this will start things going for us”
Scunthorpe boss Brian Laws was not happy with the way that his team twice threw away the lead before finally losing the game, “I'm very disappointed to come to Kidderminster and come away with nothing having given two leads away. We went in front and that calmed us down but then we got too cocky instead of playing the way we were playing. That was our worst defensive display this year; two straight balls down the middle have cost us goals. At the end of the day if you defend like that you aren't going to win many games. We need to get back to defending well and being one of the most solid teams in the division. People will suggest we can't beat the bottom but we have had it in our hands and let it slip twice. We should be coming to places like this and winning.”
