Match Report by St@tto

Harriers made progress in the League Cup, progressing into the last eight of the competition after a narrow victory over Nuneaton at Aggborough.

The visitors started quite well and should have taken an early lead when Danny Tonks found himself in acres of space on the right but fired into the side netting.  Harriers' first decent chance came after 20 minutes when they were awarded a free kick 30 yards from goal, Michael McGrath took the kick and curled it over the wall but it had no power in it and was easy for Andy Needham in the Borough goal to catch.  McGrath was involved again when Harriers took the lead; it was his corner from the right that found Liam Teraud at the far post, his header was cleared off the line and Michael Xiourouppa was on had to lash the loose ball into the net.

Nuneaton went close again when Harriers failed to defend a corner properly and the ball fell to Tonks again who saw his shot blocked by Michael Connolly in the home goal.  A swift counter-attack after 33 minutes saw Harriers double their lead; Simon Fitter cleared the ball down the right wing over the Borough defence leaving Xiourouppa with a clear run at goal, instead of shooting he played the ball square to Curtis Shaw who missed his kick completely but McGrath was following up behind him and fired the ball into the bottom corner of Needham's net.  Harriers controlled the rest of the half but were unable to open up the visiting defence again.

The second half was scrappy, Harriers had the best of the possession but the Nuneaton defence stood firm.  There was no real goalmouth action until nearly halfway through the period; Craig Reid brought the ball forward, and then found Shaw who helped it on to Jordan Blair on hte right wing but he fired his shot into the side netting.  Harriers felt that they should have had a penalty soon afterwards when it appeared that the ball was handled by a Nuneaton defender but the referee was not interested and waved play on.  Ten minutes from the end Aaron Farrell came close to increasing the lead but his shot was well saved by Needham at short range and then deep in stoppage time he went close again crashing a shot against the crossbar and when it bounced down Nathan Holloway somehow managed to steer it over the bar from two yards out.  Nuneaton had a late rally in the cloing minutes and nearly forced a consolation goal from a corner but the Harriers defence managed to scramble the ball clear.
