Match Report by St@tto

Harriers' season drew to a disappointing close after they were comfortably beaten by a West Brom side who clinched the runners-up spot in the league.  The only consolation for Harriers was the two goals scored by Aaron Farrell to make him the top scorer in the division for the second season running (last season he did it while with Boldmere).

The game kicked off in terrible, torrential, rain that at any other stage of the season would surely have ensured a postponement and Albion had a great start as a result of the conditions.  Stuart Nicholson chased a long ball into the Harriers penalty area and Sean Mapson rushed out to meet him but on the slippery surface was unable to stop and brought him down.  Referee Holbrook had no hesitation in pointing to the penalty spot; Ross Clarke stepped forward to take the kick and just beat the dive of Mapson with his shot to give the visitors a sixth minute lead.

Farrell was a man on a mission in his quest for goals and went close to equalising with a good shot that Matt Jones in the Albion goal deflected onto the post with his legs.  Albion winger Chris Humphrey caused Harriers numerous problems and it was his run that led to the second goal, after carrying the ball forward he found Nicholson on the left in acres of space and he slotted the ball home easily.  West Brom put the game out of Harriers' reach shortly before the interval; Clarke picked out Rob Elvins on the right wing with an excellent long cross-field pass and the striker tucked it into the far corner of the net.

Harriers pulled on back in first half stoppage time, James Dyke slipped the ball through the inside left channel to Farrell who had plenty of time to pick his spot and slot his shot under Jones.

Early in the second half Harriers should have pulled another goal back; Jordan Blair made a good run into the Albion penalty area on the right and pulled the ball back to the far post where Craig Reid should have found the back of the net but instead fired over the bar.  Just as Harriers were looking as if they could get back into the game Albion restored their three-goal advantage; Kyle Paterson hit a harmless looking long range shot that Mapson juggled over his own shoulder into the back of the net.

The visitors could have gone further ahead after 72 minutes when Elvins made a good run on the right wing and crossed to the near post to Clarke who looked certain to score but he fired just wide.  The fifth goal came soon afterwards, Paterson finding the net with a powerful angled shot form the edge of the penalty area.  With time running out Harriers pulled another back when Jimmy Holmes brought down Curtis Shaw in the penalty area; Farrell added to his tally with his sixteenth league goal of the season although Jones guessed right and almost got his hands to the shot.
