Harriers were dumped out of the League Cup at the quarter-final stage after a thrilling cup tie at
Aggborough that saw them recover a two goal deficit to send the game into extra time.
The visitors were quickest out of the blocks and soon took control of the match making Harriers look a very ordinary side on the openin half hour. The opening goal came after just eight minutes, Sean Dowdall breaking free of the Harriers defence and lifting his shot over Craig Johnson. Ten minutes later the advantage was doubled, Dowdall again causing problems for the Harriers defence before setting up the chance for Robert Stanton to turn the ball in from close range. Highgate caould have gone further ahead after 27 minutes but David Hargreaves headed wide from Gareth Hickin's cross. Harriers didn't threaten until two minutes before the interval when Carl Dudley shot just wide of the post. After the break Harriers improved considerably and began to dominate the game. Simon Fitter's free kick found Michael Xiourouppa whose goalbound header was cleared off the line by Liam Foxall and then on the hour Fitter was again involved but this time Dudley headed his cross wide. Two minutes later Daniel Lennon broke into the penalty area but dragged his shot across the face of goal. With twenty minutes remaining Harriers pulled a goal back, Matt White crossed from the right and Xiourouppa dived to head past Lee Parry in the Highgate goal. Four minutes later Harriers were level when Lennon's through ball set Xiourouppa clear and he chipped it over the advancing Parry from outside the penalty area. In the closing stages Harriers had chances to win the game, eight minutes from the end Daniel Bulmer broke into the penalty area and pulled the ball back for Dudley but he shot over and in stoppage time Xiourouppa found Lennon but he shot straight at the keeper and the game moved into extra time. Six minutes into the first period Bulmer got free on the right and his cross found James Dyke but the midfielder couldn't keep his shot under control and it flew over the bar. Against the run of play Highgate regained the lead four minutes into the second period, Karl Fellows scoring with a low shot into the bottom corner of the net from the edge of the penalty area and four minutes later the wrapped up the game with another goal. Stanton won the ball on the edge of the penalty area, appearing to foul Kevin Roeton in the process but the referee allowed play to continue, and took it round Johnson to shoot into the empty net. |
