Referee: Steve Tomlinson (Hampshire) |
Harriers ended their seven-game winless streak in spectacular fashion with their biggest win since beating Bath City 6-0 at Aggborough in December 1996. Second-from-bottom Stafford, still looking for their first win under new manager Steve Bull, were no match for sparkling Harriers who played with a style a freedom that has been missing for most of the season. The visitors were given a warning to Harriers' intent after ten minutes when Simon Russell robbed Alex Gibson of the ball on the left and raced clear on goal but fired his shot wide of the far post. It didn't take long for Harriers to make the breakthrough, however; three minutes later Russell, playing on the left wing in Harriers' attacking formation, fed the ball inside to Darryl Knights who drilled a low shot into the bottom corner of Danny Alcock's goal from 25 yards out. On 20 minutes Harriers doubled their advantage; Matt Barnes-Homer turned Djoumin Sangare inside out on the left wing and sent over a delightful cross that Iyseden Christie headed past Alcock from close range. Harriers continued to dominate the game and went further ahead after 24 minutes. Barnes-Homer's clearance set Knights clear and he picked out Russell with an excellent reverse pass that Russell despatched into the far corner. Barnes-Homer went close himself shortly afterwards with a dipping shot from distance that only just cleared the crossbar. The fourth goal arrived ten minutes before the interval; a long ball out of defence was headed on by Christie to Knights on the right, Christie advanced into the penalty area to take the return and was brought down by Alcock. Barnes-Homer took over the penalty-taking duties from Christie and sent Alcock the wrong way from the spot. After the break Harriers continued to dominate the game and rip the Stafford defence to shreds. Early in the half Christie found his way to goal blocked on the edge of the penalty area and instead fed the ball to Russell who curled a shot from the corner of the box just wide of the far post. Shortly afterwards the visitors finally threatened Chris MacKenzie in the Harriers goal; Chris Flynn played the ball in from the left to Liam Hughes with his back to goal, he turned well and hit a stinging shot that MacKenzie did well to save. Harriers increased their lead further soon after; Knights intercepted the ball in the heart of the Rangers defence and burst into the penalty area before pulling the ball back to the far post where Christie was left with a simple tap-in for his eighth goal of the season. Every time that Harriers attacked they looked dangerous and likely to score. With 13 minutes left an inventive free-kick taken by Jeff Kenna let Barnes-Homer in but his shot was blocked at the expense of a corner. It was surprising, given their superiority, that Harriers didn't add to their score further until the last minute; Christie was the provider, setting up Russell who mis-hit his shot and caught out Alcock inside the near post. In stoppage time Harriers could have scored again, a scramble in the penalty area saw Brian Smikle's shot blocked and Christie's follow-up crash against the crossbar and bounce down onto the goalline and away to safety to deny him his hat-trick |
