Harriers' season came to a disappointing end with defeat at Woking and a performance that was more reminiscent of the dark days of the early part of the season than the exciting football of the last few weeks. There was only one change to the side that had thrashed Burton Albion earlier in the week with Chris MacKenzie taking over in goal from Dean Coleman, but the performance was wholly different. In the early stages both teams seemed set to go for victory and not treat the game as a typical end-of-season encounter. MacKenzie was called into action to acrobatically tip a header from Giuseppe Sole over the bar while at the other end Nick Gindre did well to dive full length to his right to keep out a 25-yard drive from Russ Penn that was destined for the net. The home team took the lead after23 minutes; Iyseden Christie lost possession in midfield, Matt Pattison picking up the loose ball and charging forward; Christie did well to track back with him to try and make up for his mistake but the defence opened up ahead of the Woking man who drilled a low shot past MacKenzie from just inside the penalty area. On the half-hour mark Harriers thought that they had equalised; Christie saw his looping header come back off the crossbar but he quickly reacted to bundle the ball over the line, Gindre appearing to claw it out from well beyond the line. The officials, however, saw it differently and didn't award the goal; had Harriers drawn level at this point the game may have ultimately turned out differently. Early in the second half a good move by Harriers almost brought them level; Simon Russell won the ball and threaded a pass through the inside-left channel to Darryl Knights who set up Christie but he was blocked by Jay Gasson just as he was about to shoot and the ball flew over the bar. The game was killed off by two goals in five minutes by the home team. Bradley Quamina doubled the advantage with a good finish that gave MacKenzie little chance to keep out and then lanky striker Marvin Morgan got into the penalty area and pulled the ball back to Pattison at the near post who turned well and fired in from close range. Morgan should have added to the lead twenty minutes from time; racing clear of the sluggish Harriers defence his poor control let him down and at the second attempt he blasted his shot over. After being quite entertaining in the early stages the game by now had turned into a dull end-of-season affair. Harriers only troubled Gindre in the last minute when Russell's cross from the left picked out Knights but his weak header was straight at the keeper. |
