Referee: Richard Wigglesworth (South Yorkshire) |
Harriers moved back into the play-off positions for the first time since late January thanks to a last gasp goal from Chris McPhee deep in stoppage time. Mark Yates chose the same team for the fourth game in a row, looking to stretch the unbeaten run to six games and record a sixth successive clean sheet. In difficult conditions, there was a stiff breeze swirling around inside the stadium, Harriers were to first to go close to opening the scoring when Wrexham goalkeeper Anthony Williams, a one-time Harriers transfer target, nearly spilled Matt Barnes-Homer's cross into his own net. Barnes-Homer had another good chance after 25 minutes of an entertaining first half when Martin Riley's punt through the inside-right channel set him clear on goal but he fired over the bar at the near post. At the other end Ryan Flynn's cross from the right found an unmarked Jefferson Louis in the middle of the Harriers penalty area but his header was well saved by Adam Bartlett, much to the disdain of the home support who spent most of the evening barracking the Harriers stopper. Bartlett came to Harriers' rescue again on the half hour; Riley lost the ball in midfield allowing Obi Anoruo a clear run on goal but the keeper came out quickly to beat his shot away. After the interval Wrexham enjoyed their best spell of the game for the first 20 minutes; despite the wind being against them they kept Harriers pegged back in their own half. Just short of the hour mark Sam Aiston crossed from the left and found Aurelien Collin who headed over the bar. Harriers' best chance of the half fell to skipper Mark Creighton; Lee Baker's free-kick from deep on the left fell to the big defender beyond the far post but he headed straight at Williams. Harriers grew stronger as the game wore on, changing their formation to stifle the home side in the centre of the park, but they were unable to make the breakthrough. The game went into stoppage time and Harriers forced a series of corners; Bartlett's long clearance was headed out for the first which Martin Brittain didn't deliver very well, but again it was headed out and he had another opportunity. This time his delivery beat the first defender and found McPhee in the middle of the goalmouth, his downward header deceived the home defence and crept inside the far post to spark scenes of delirium amongst the travelling support in the far corner of the ground. |
