Referee: Brendan Malone (Wiltshire) |
Harriers control of their own destiny was lost as they were comprehensively beaten by a rampant Stevenage side at Broadhall Way; now they must win their last match and hope that results elsewhere go in their favour to enable them to get into the play-offs. There was good news for Harriers before kick-off as skipper Mark Creighton was passed fit to play after limping out of the weekend draw at Histon. The good news did not last long, however, as Creighton, along with the rest of the defence were slow to react as the ball pinged around in the penalty area after Mitchell Cole's shot was blocked; Harriers had three chances to clear the ball before Steve Morison hooked it in from close range to give the home side a fourth minute lead. Stevenage were clearly fired up for the encounter and were quicker to the ball and into the challenge all over the park. They could have doubled their advantage after eleven minutes; Andy Drury's cross-cum-shot deceived Adam Bartlett and hit the crossbar, Cole's follow-up shot looked to be going wide but Bartlett took no chances and did well to parry it at the expense of a corner. Harriers' first decent chance came after 27 minutes; Martin Brittain's 25-yard free-kick beat the wall but Chris Day dived away to his right to save at the near post. At the other end a long ball through the middle put Morison in again who used great strength to hold off Martin Riley only to see his shot saved by Bartlett. Somewhat against the run of play Harriers equalised in stoppage time at the end of the half; Brittain's ball in from the right was knocked into the penalty area by Chris McPhee into the path of Justin Richards who slotted it past Day to record his 21st goal of the season. The Harriers joy was short-lived, however, as Borough regained their advantage just two minutes into the second half. Bartlett's kick fell straight to Lee Boylan who played a one-two with Drury out to his right before hitting a 30-yard effort that caught the keeper out at the near post after taking an awkward bounce. Just before the hour mark Harriers almost grabbed a very lucky equaliser; Scott Laird's attempted back-pass was woefully short and Day had to hurry off his line to attempt a clearance. His kick hit Matt Barnes-Homer and ballooned back over his head but unfortunately for Harriers it dropped over the bar. Shortly afterward the game was over as Stevenage added the third. Cole got free on the left wing with the Harriers defence motionless with their arms in the air waiting for an offside flag that never came, his low cross was turned in from close range by Boylan. Stevenage could have added more to their tally in the latter stages of the game; Cole's corner from the left found Mark Roberts at the far post but he headed into the side netting and then again the Harriers defence stood arms aloft as Morison went through the middle but Bartlett held his shot. The result sees Stevenage jump over Harriers into the play-off positions, pushing Harriers down to sixth. Harriers now have to win their final game of the season at home to Kettering and hope that Stevenage fail to win at Mansfield or Torquay fail to beat Burton. A Histon defeat at Crawley would also help Harriers but for them to overtake the villagers there would have to be a swing of eight goals in Harriers' favour for them to snatch Histon's place on goal difference. |
