Harriers face an unwanted midweek trip to deepest Essex after the massed ranks of Braintree defenders thwarted their attempts to make a breakthrough and ended their eight-game winning streak. Harriers were without key players Russ Penn (suspended), Iyseden Christie and Gavin Hurren (both injured) and as a result lacked their normal drive and spark and gave a thoroughly lacklustre display. Even so, dour as the game was, the home team had enough chances to win the game and were rarely threatened by their lower league visitors who set out their stall to return home with a draw. James Constable should have fired Harriers ahead on 19 minutes after Simon Russell's pass had split the Town defence open and put in Brian Smikle who got to the byline on the right and pulled the ball back to the far post where constable fired over the bar. Andy White went close soon afterwards, receiving the ball from Michael Blackwood he flicked it up and hit a 25-yard volley that Nick Morgan did well to keep out. A neat passing move between Jonny Harkness, Jeff Kenna and Russell ended with Smikle getting in a snap-shot that hit the side netting. Just past the hour mark Braintree had their best chance of the game; a ball through the inside left channel split Harriers apart and set James Hawes clear on goal but Scott Bevan stood up and kept the shot out with an outstretched arm and Harkness was on hand to get rid of the loose ball. At the other end a run from Blackwood through the middle of the Braintree defence ended with a 25-yard shot that Morgan spilled at the expense of a corner. The last good chance for Harriers came with 20 minutes left; Harkness crossed from the left and picked out Smikle who grazed the bar with a diving header. The visitors were by now defending with most, if not all, men behind the ball and frustrated Harriers in their attempts to snatch a winner. |
