Harriers extended their unbeaten "run" to two games, following up their first win of the season against Altrincham with a hard-fought point at Burton's Pirelli Stadium where they twice had to come from behind to save a point. Unchanged from the side that had beaten Altrincham Harriers set out to continue their good form at Burton where they had been unbeaten for the last two seasons and began the game with a strong wind at their backs. Despite having the conditions in their favour Harriers were not the first to threaten; after 18 minutes an Albion free-kick on the right led to first Ryan Austin and then John Brayford having shots that were blocked, Harriers counter-attacked and Russ Penn went close with a shot from distance. Martin Brittain was at the heart of most of Harriers' best attacks, especially from set-pieces. Two corners taken by him almost led to the deadlock being broken; first from the right wing he picked out Luke Jones who headed just over the bar and then from the opposite flank he found Matt Barnes-Homer unmarked who had plenty of time to do better but headed wide. Harriers were often undone by attacks down their left flank and it was from here that Burton opened the scoring; a long ball over the top caught Lee Baker with his hand in the air fruitlessly appealing for offside and let in Jody Banim who had plenty of time to pick out Greg Pearson who was in acres of space to tuck his shot in at the near post. Penn went close again with a 30-yard effort that flew just over the bar while at the other end Banim was allowed to run through the heart of the Harriers defence before hitting a good shot that Adam Bartlett did exceptionally well to tip over the bar for a corner. The set piece cam to nothing and the home side went into the break with a single-goal advantage. After the break Harriers struggled to get going attacking into the wind and it was midway through the period before they threatened. Again it was Brittain who was the man involved, his 25-yard free-kick beating the wall and leaving veteran keeper Kevin Poole standing before skimming the keeper's left-hand post. The game sprang to life fifteen minutes from the end when a slick passing move by Harriers carved the home defence open; Brian Smikle found Brittain whose ball into the box was flicked on by Darryl Knights to Justin Richards who fed it into the path of Barnes-Homer who slid his shot under the keeper to level the scores. The scores were level for just 67 seconds; Burton charged forward with Pearson's hot being well parried by Bartlett but it was Albion's Brayford who was quickest to react to the loose ball and fire his team back into the lead. Three minutes later Harriers were level again; inevitably it was Brittain who was the provider, his cross from the right found Jones whose header just crossed the line before the home defence could clear. In the closing minutes both teams could have nicked a winner and taken all three points; Brittain's ball in from the right found Knights who set up Smikle who lobbed just over the bar and then in stoppage time Austin hit a blistering 25-yard free-kick that flew past the wall and Bartlett had to be very alert to beat it away. |
