Referee: Pete Bankes (Merseyside) |
Despite the best efforts of the visitors to spoil Harriers' 125th Anniversary Party the home team came from behind to record a well-earned 3-1 victory. Marc Williams had overcome an ankle injury to return to the starting line-up as the only change from the team that had been held by Ebbsfleet in the previous game. Williams almost made his recall pay-off inside the opening ten minutes, as both teams were to slow to get going half chances fell to him and his opposite number in the Alfreton side former Harrier Drewe Broughton who was making his debut. Neither player was able to capitalise, however, and the deadlock remained. The game degenerated after the opening exchanges; Alfreton had come with a plan to frustrate Harriers and their physical approach led to a number of feisty encounters all over the pitch. One of the visitors' heavy challenges led to a 27th minute free-kick that almost saw Harriers take the lead, Kyle Storer's shot beat the wall but was held by Town keeper Daniel Lowson. Alfreton took the lead on the half-hour, Broughton sending Danny Lewis the wrong way from the penalty spot after Luke Jones had pushed Theo Streete. At the other end, seven minutes before the break, another free-kick led to Tom Marshall's shot being tipped over the bar by Lowson at the expense of a corner. From that corner Scott Phelan's cross was headed back across the face of goal by Jones and turned in from close range by Marc Williams. The half ended in controversy when Marshall was felled, apparently by Broughton, in an off-the-ball incident that was missed by all of the officials. After a lot of finger pointing and pushing-and-shoving amongst the players the referee took no other action than to give both captains a talking to. After the break Harriers refused to be dragged further down by Alfreton's style of play and began to play more football, taking control of the game. Just six minutes after the restart Nick Wright and Phelan combined to set Lee Vaughan clear on the right wing, his excellent cross to the far post was turned in by Steve Guinan for his third goal of the season. The best of the chances now fell Harriers' way; Wright picked up the ball on the right and made a strong run to the inside-left channel before cutting inside the defender and getting away a shot that was blocked. Eventually Harriers made the game safe in the last minute; Marc Williams made a good run through the inside-left channel before slipping the ball inside to Jamille Matt who helped it across to the opposite flank to James Vincent; he fired in a low shot off the far post to record his first goal for the club. Deep into stoppage time Harriers could have increased their lead further; Jones' long ball forward found Matt who carried the ball forward before cutting inside a defender only to see his shot saved by the feet of Lowson. |
