Harriers are beginning to turn anywhere that isn't Aggborough into a fortress after recording their third consecutive clean sheet on their travels. This 1-0 victory follows on the heels of a goalless draw at Swansea and a 1-0 win at Northampton.
Steve Burton returned to the side in place of Sam Shilton, the only change to the starting line-up that knocked Northwich Victoria out of the FA cup in the last game and a more conservative formation was adopted with John Williams and Dean Bennett attacking from midfield rather than playing as out-and-out strikers.
Rochdale started the game better, but they only had a short spell before Harriers began to take complete control of the game. It may have been different if Kevin Townson had done better when he pounced on Wayne Hatswell's poor seventh minute clearance but he shot straight at Stuart Brock. The visitors started to exert themselves, John Williams in particular enjoying himself wide on the right wing running 'Dale left back Simon Grand ragged at every opportunity. Harriers should have taken te lead after 24 minutes, Andy White held off the challenge of Wayne Evans and got to the byline on the left before rolling the ball back into the path of Sean Parrish but he fired his shot over the bar. Shortly aftwerwards Bennett hit a long range effort that Neil Edwards id well to push onto the foot of the post. The opening goal was not long in coming, John Williams left Grand for dead again and got the ball to the byline on the right and then picked out Matt Gadsby 12 yards from goal who made no mistake in registering his first goal in a Harriers shirt and in fact his first senior goal in his career. As half time approached Harriers had a good chance to double the advantage, Burton's corner from the right was flapped at by Evans and the ball fell to Danny Williams who scooped his shot over the bar. The home team were dealt a blow in stoppage time when knew signing Gary Jones was forced to leave the field after picking up an injury and was substituted straight away by Chris Beech.
After the break Harriers continued to dominate the game, even Craig Hinton got into the attack breaking forward on the right and firing a low cross across the face of the penalty area just out of reach of three oncoming attackers. Within minutes Rochdale had their best chance of the game so far when Gareth Griffiths got up well at the far post to head a left wing corner goalwards but Brock saved well to keep it out. At the other end White created an opening for Gadsby who hit his shot straight at Evans but when the keeper spilled the ball there was no red-shirted player on hand to pick up the loose ball.
Just after the hour point Patrick McCourt drew another good save from Brock, getting into the penalty area on the left and hitting a fierce shot from an acute angle that the keeper palmed away. Soon afterwards 'Dale were reduced to ten men when substitute Michale Simpkins was forced to withdraw with a hamstring injury and they had already used all of their three subs. Former Harriers Mickael Antoine-Curier had also come on at half time but he was anonymous and showed that it was no great loss when he decided not to return after his one and only appearance in a red shirt.
Harriers controlled the rest of the game comfortably, twenty minutes from the end Bo Henriksen set John Williams free with a long pass but the big man pulled his shot across the face of goal and just wide of the far post. Three minutes from time Henriksen almost wrapped the game up when he chased a long ball but Evans got his fingertips to the Dane's chip and pushed it onto the bar. |
