Harriers recorded their first home win in the league for two months, and only the third all season, after coming from behind to beat Orient and move up to 20th place in the divsion.
Jan Molby decided to name an unchanged side, keeping faith with the eleven who beat Woking in the FA Cup last weekend, and left his two new signings on the bench to await their debuts. Harriers started sluggishly and suffered a disastrous start when 17-year-old Gabby Zakuani headed the visitors ahead, the Reds' defence were unable to cope with Justin Miller's long throw from the left and the big defender rose almost unchallenged to glance his header inside the far post. The home team responded with a series of attack and were denied only by the form of young O's keeper Glenn Morris.
On eleven minutes a long ball out of the Harriers defence was flicked on by man-of-the-match Andy White into the path of Dean Bennett who raced through on goal but hit his shot straight at the keeper. Soon after, Adie Smith crossed low from the right for White who nipped in ahead of his marker but was denied by an excellent double save by Morris. Poor finishing was also hampering Harriers who created a string of chances, a deep cross from the left found Matt Gadsby at the far post who headed down to White but he should have done better than hit his shot straight at the keeper.
Orient were not out of the game, however, and looked dangerous every time that they attacked. Midway through the first half they had a good chance that fell to Miller who pounced on a loose ball after Wayne Hatswell had only made a half clearance. The Orient man ran at the Harriers defence who backed off and allowed him space to shoot, Stuart Brock had to be alert to pluck the high shot out from under the crossbar. At the other end Bennett had another run at goal but shot weakly at Morris. The equalising goal came on the half hour mark, and after keeping Harriers at bay almost single-handed Morris was beaten by one of his own players, Mark Peters completely wrong-footed him when he got his head in the way of Gadsby's cross. efore the break Harriers had the opportunity to take the lead, a quickly taken free kick by Danny Williams found Bennett 30 yards from goal and his drive went narrowly wide of the far post and then in stoppage time Danny Williams was involved again, his cross from the right found White at the far post who headed onto the roof of the net.
After the break Harriers played much better and looked to get on top early on. Within minutes of the restart Hatswell saw his header from Steve Burton's corner blocked by Gary Alexander. Soon afterwards Gadsby went on a run, and without any clear options for a pass went for goal himself, the shot was deflected but somehow Morris managed to change direction and tip it just past the post for a corner. Bo Henriksen headed over from a Danny Williams cross as Harriers built up a head of steam in search of the lead. The second goal came after 64 minutes, Henriksen received the ball in space on the right, turned, and crossed to the far post where Gadsby swivelled to volley past the dive of Morris from the ege of the penalty area.
From then onwards there was only one team going to win the game, Harriers controlled the closing stages of the game and were rarely threatened. White went close to adding a third, picking up the ball on the right and beating towo defenders before hitting a weak shot at Morris. Orient didn't lie down completely, the Harriers defence allowed Wayne Purser too much time and backed off him as he ran at them through the inside-right channel but he dragged his shot wide of the far post. Substitute Scott Rickards almost marked his debut with a goal nine minutes from the end with a run that ended with a 20-yard shot that went inches wide and caused half of the people in the ground to think that he had found the net. Harriers saw out the remaining time and took the points desrvedly even though they hadn't been at the top of their game. |
