Match Report by St@tto

A strike from captain Alex Rae less than two minutes from time saved Wolves from an embarrassing defeat at Aggborough, gaining them a draw and a replay that they did not deserve.

Jan Molby sprung a surprise by naming new signing Jesper Christiansen in the starting line-up for his debut while Adie Smith recovered from the calf strain that had threatened to keep him out to take his place at right back; otherwise the side was the same as the one that beat Bristol Rovers last weekend, Graham Ward kept his place to take on his former team while ex-Harrier Mark Clyde came into the Wolves defence.

Harriers took the game to their illustrious opponent from the start, knocking the ball around with aplomb, and should have taken the lead after just three minutes when Smith rounded off a good passing movement with a cross from the right that picked out Henriksen at the far post but the Dane snatched at his volley and sent it soaring over the crossbar.  Wolves didn't look to be relishing the task at hand at all, none of them looked "up for it", but they almost snatched a freak opener when Stuart Brock slipped as he was taking a goal kick and sent the ball straight to Kenny Miller but as he advanced on goal he was denied by a good tackle from Harriers captain Wayne Hatswell.

Smith was seeing plenty of the ball on the right wing and it was another of his crosses that caused problems for the Wolves back line forcing Clyde to head clear.  At the other end Lee Naylor did well going on a jinking run past Smith and Craig Hinton before sliding a low pass to Colin Cameron who sliced a shot wide from 25 yards out.  Harriers' response was almost immediate; Hatswell brought the ball out of defence and found Dean Bennett who fed Henriksen but his shot on the turn went narrowly wide.  Ward nearly marked his first game against his former employers with a goal ten minutes before the interval when Sean Parrish got to the goal line on the left and crossed to the far post but he could only direct his header into the side netting.

As the half ran out Wolves had a couple more half chances; Cameron hit another long-range shot that took a deflection before Brock saved it low down to his right and then shortly afterwards Mark Kennedy fired a 25-yarder straight at the keeper.

After the interval Harriers continued to dominate; Christiansen almost marked his debut with a goal when his shot was deflected and Michael Oakes had to save at the foot of the post.  The debutant was denied by Oakes again when the keeper just reached the ball ahead of him from another Smith cross.  When Wolves eventually got out of their own half they went close to an undeserved lead when Brock spilled a Kenny Miller shot but Hatswell was on hand to clear for a corner.

Harriers piled on the pressure and it seemed only a matter of time before the deadlock was broken.  After 72 minutes Henriksen lifted the ball over the Wolves defence for Christiansen to run onto but he was halted by the tackle of the game by Jody Craddock on the edge of the penalty area.  Three minutes later Henriksen had been replaced by John Williams and within seconds of coming onto the field he was close to covering himself in glory; he raced onto a through ball and beat the onrushing Oakes to it but was forced wide, his cross to the far post was heading towards Christiansen until Naylor dived in to head it out for a corner.

The goal finally came two minutes later; Ward took a corner from the right which was helped on by Matt Gadsby and Smith to the feet of Christiansen and he fed it to John Williams beyond the far post who turned and fired a shot into the bottom corner to spark scenes of delirium around three sides of the stadium.

At last Wolves finally woke up and began to enjoy some possession.  Harriers stood firm at the back and it looked as though the best Wolves would have to offer was a quickly taken 25-yard free kick that Rae fired over the bar.  Then, with time running out, Cameron received the ball from Shaun Newton on the right and slipped it into the path of Rae who fired across Brock and inside the far post.  If that was undeserved it would have been a cruel injustice had Ioan Ganea's shot in stoppage time found the net but Hatswell threw himself in front of the ball to make an excellent stop.  Harriers will go to Molineux for the replay full of confidence but will probably face a sterner test as Wolves will not make the same mistake of underestimating them again.
