Match Report by St@tto |
Harriers put on another good performance at Molineux but Wolves gave a better account of themselves and two Kenny Miller strikes saw the Premiership side through. The Scot struck once in each half to end the resistance of the valiant Harriers team. Danny Williams and Bo Henriksen returned to the starting line-up in place of Matt Gadsby and the cup-tied Adam Murray while Wolves made a number of changes to the team that struggled to draw at Aggborough in the first game. Wolves were a better team than the one that played in the first encounter and attacked Harriers from the start. In only the second minute Paul Butler headed wide at the far post from Shaun Newton's right wing free kick. Ten minutes later Ioan Ganea pounced on a short Craig Hinton back pass but when clear through on Stuart Brock's goal he dragged his shot wide of the far post. By this time Harriers had had a chance to have opened the scoring when Jesper Christiansen lofted a shott high and wide in the first minute, but Harriers had to wait until midway through the half before they started to get into the game and created another decent opening. Harriers won were awarded a freee kick on the right wing that Danny Williams took, lofting the ball to the far post, and Henriksen arrived late to meet it but stretching fired the ball wide. Shortly afterwards a long ball out of defence was helped on by Henriksen to his countryman Christiansen who was tackled but the ball ran to Graham Ward who hit a low drive from 20 yards just wide of the post. Just as Harriers were establishing themselves in the game and enjoying a large proportion of the possession Wolves took the lead. A Mark Kennedy free kick from the left to the far post was headed back by Keith Andrews and Miller arrived to head it across Brock and just inside the far post. Harriers almost levelled in stoppage time at the end of the first half, a Ward cross from the right was knocked down at the far post by Parrish and Henriksen's gentle lob drifted narrowly wide of the post. After the break Harriers were first to try to take control and within ten minutes had come close to getting back into the game. A deep right wing cross from the industrious Graham Ward looked promising but Michael Oakes claimed well under pressure from Christiansen and Sean Parrish and then moments later Danny Williams played a neat 1-2 with Christiansen and the nfired a 25-yard effort just over the bar. Graham Ward had a glorious chance just after the hour mark rising highest to meet Danny Williams' right wing free kick but his goalbound header was blocked by Newton and the danger was cleared. Two minutes later Wolves effectively killed the game off; receiving the ball on the right wing Miller aimed a cross to the far post, it was deflected on the way and hit the post bouncing on the line before being cleared by Hinton. The linesman, however, considered that the ball had crossed the line and signalled the goal. Shortly afterwards Harriers were awarded another free kick in a dangerous position, central and 25 yards from goal. Danny Williams took the kick; his shot beat the wall but was straight at Oakes who didn't hold it cleanly and when Henriksen challenged a fracas ensued with players from both sides joining in. After the dust had settled Oakes and Henriksen both had their names take nby referee Messias and were soon followed by Andrews. With a two goal deficit Harriers were left with a mountain to climb as they were not troubling Oakes greatly; most of their good approach play was being let down by a lack of a killer finish. The scoreline was almost given a totally unrepresentative look late on when Miller got free on the right but dragged his shot wide of the far post. Harriers left the game with their heads held high knowing that they had matched a supposedly far superior team. |
