Match Report by St@tto

Harriers' barren run finally ended with their first win of 2004.  Two goals in the second half, the first of the season for both Ian Foster and Jesper Christiansen gave them a comfortable victory over a poor Swansea side.

Captain Wayne Hatswell returned to the side after missing the defeat at Southend through suspension and Scott Rickards came back in place of the injured Graham Ward.  Despite manager Jan Molby's pre-match promise of a high-tempo game with plenty of attacking football from Harriers it was a quite opening period from the home team who showed no early indication that they were going to be any better than in previous games.  Swansea were on top in the early stages and Harriers were thankful to Hatswell for his timely intervention that stole the ball off the toe of the lively Leon Britton who had found himself in acres of space in the penalty area.

Midway through the half City went close again; Harriers lost possession in the centre of their own half and Roberto Martinez hit a powerful drive from 25 yards that flashed past Stuart Brock's right-hand post.  Andy Robinson then went close with a free kick from just outside the penalty area that beat the wall but Brock managed to tip over the bar for a corner.  Swansea should have had a penalty after 38 minutes when Craig Hinton pushed Robinson in the penalty area, the Swans man went down but thankfully for Harriers referee Miller saw nothing and waved play on.

In the last minute of the half Harriers finally tested Roger Freestone in the visitors' goal; a deep right wing cross from Matt Gadsby picked out Hatswell unmarked in the penalty area who was still forward from the previous Harriers corner but the skipper headed straight at Freestone.  In stoppage time another Robinson free kick tested Brock; this time it was more central and further out but was again well struck and the keeper saw it late but managed to push it round the post for a corner.

After the interval Harriers came out with more purpose and gradually took control of the game.  Four minutes into the second half a good passing move involving Foster and Scott Stamps led to Dean Keates crossing from the left to the far post where Rickards, stretching, was unable to reach the ball with any power and Freestone gathered comfortably.  Soon after a Keates corn er from the right found Christiansen beyond the far post who headed back into the danger area for Foster who hit a volley on the turn that was well saved by Freestone.  A minute later another Keates corner was played short to Adam Murray whose cross to the far post was headed over by Hatswell.

Harriers' first goal in 374 minutes finally arrived to much relief; Murray was involved again with a pass that was more mis-hit shot than intended pass was chased down by Foster on the left, Freestone came out to gather it but fumbled it allowing Foster to nip round behind him and stroke the ball into the empty net.

The goal gave the home team renewed confidence and every time the had the ball they looked as though they would add to their advantage.  Murray tried his luck from over 20 yards out, picking up Christiansen's lay-off, and firing over the bar.  Murray had been quiet in the first half but was now pulling all of the strings in the heart of the Harriers midfield and running the game.  It was his pass that picked out Rickards on the right wing to begin the move that lead to Harriers' second goal.  Rickards got to the goalline and his delightful cross was met by the head of Christiansen and directed beyond the reach of Freestone.

From this point on the was never any danger of The Swans getting back into the game and it was only a question of whether or not Harriers would add any more goals.  Murray's was the best effort - a lob from 35 yards that dropped only just over the bar.  Harriers held on for a confidence boosting win and three points that moved them a place further away from the relegation zone.
