Harriers' brief upturn in form came to a juddering halt with a disappointing defeat on their first visit to Burton's new Pirelli Stadium that stretched their winless run in the league to six games. Away from home Harriers have not won since September's victory at Gravesend & Northfleet and their performance at Burton did not look like one that would end that run. After their great midweek win at Boston in the LDV Vans Trophy Stuart Watkiss named an unchanged team but the performance did not match those standards and Harriers were second best all over the park. A scrappy first half saw neither team create much although Burton had most of the possession and kept Harriers pinned back in their own half for long spells. It was not until ten minutes before the break that either side looked like scoring when Burton's lively winger Keith Gilroy missed a double chance first shooting against Johnny Mullins' legs and then firing the rebound over the bar. In stoppage time Harriers' best move of the half saw Iyseden Christie's pass find Taiwo Atieno who knocked it into the path of Simon Heslop unfortunately, the youngster's finishing deserted him and he fired high and wide. Also in stoppage time DAryl Burgess picked up a yellow card that took his tally for the season to five and a suspension for the next game. The second half was little better although Harriers should have gone ahead early in the half; Michael Blackwood turned right-back Terry Henshaw inside out and then crossed from the left to the far post where an unmarked Christie couldn't direct his header and sent the ball back across the face of goal. The Brewers took the lead after 49 minutes; former Harrier Andy Corbett pumped a free kick forward that Harriers were unable to deal with and when the loose ball dropped to Lee Bell he made no mistake rifling a low shot past Daniel Lewis. Harriers' heads dropped at this setback and although they did try to battle back into the game they didn't look like they were capable of overcoming their hosts. On the hour mark Harriers had their best chance to level the scores; Blackwood did well on the left, knocking the ball back to Wayne Hatswell whose dangerous cross was only cleared as far as Heslop, his low shot hit the foot of the post and spun along the line before being cleared for a corner. From the corner Burton didn't clear and Hatswell blazed his shot over the bar. With twenty minutes remaining Harriers suffered another setback, Burgess brought down Jon Shaw on the edge of the penalty area and was shown his second yellow card of the afternoon reducing Harriers to ten men. In the closing stages the extra man didn't seem to be any advantage to Burton who were content to sit on the lead that they had although Gilroy went close to doubling the advantage with a free-kick that beat the wall but flew wide of the near post. Either side of that effort Harriers had half chances, Terry Fleming's free kick from the left picked out Mullins at the far post but he headed over and then in stoppage time Heslop got to the byline on the right and crossed to the near post for Atieno who had time to do better but hit a first-time shot wide. |
