Match Report by St@tto

A truly dreadful all round performance from Harriers saw them crash to their heaviest defeat of the season and gift Aldershot three points that ended their seven-game away losing streak.

Mark Yates made a number of changes to the team that was beaten at Morecambe bringing in Luke Reynolds for his debut in attack while Laurie Wilson came in for Terry Fleming and Junior Osborne returned in place of Gavin Hurren.  The changes didn't appear to have the desired effect as Harriers were soon on the back foot.

The visitors had already had a corner when they went close to opening the scoring in the third minute; a cross from the left found Nick Crittenden unmarked in acres of space at the far post but John Danby reacted quickly to beat his shot away for another corner.  The respite was brief, however, as the opening goal soon came; Daryl Burgess brought down Leroy Griffiths on the edge of the penalty area and Darren Barnard curled the free-kick around the wall and into the far corner of the net.

Reynolds almost marked his debut with a goal when Russ Penn's pass over the Shots' defence left him clear but he snatched at his shot and pulled it wide.  The game may have developed differently had Harriers got back on level terms but soon they were further behind; Barnard crossed from the left and Crittenden out-jumped his marked to loop a header over Danby to make it 2-0.  The lively Crittenden was causing Harriers all sorts of problems and created an opening for Gary Holloway who directed his free header wide of the far post.

The third goal ten minutes before the break was another gift; Griffiths crossed from the right and found Ryan Williams completely unattended at the far post, he mis-hit his shot into the ground and the bounce caught Danby out and looped over him into the back of the net.  A goal for Harriers before the break may have given them a lifeline but as they were searching for it they gave away another dreadful goal in the last minute of the half; Kirk Hudson beat Burgess to the ball and knocked it past Danby who had come rushing out of the penalty area, and despite the efforts of Burgess to get back the ball rolled slowly over the line.

The home support showed their displeasure as the teams left the field at the interval and Yates showed his by sending them back out five minutes early to face the crowd.  With a half-time rollicking ringing in their ears Harriers had to find some pride and give some sort of improved performance in the second period.  There was brief hope when Reynolds, one of few - if not the only one - to come out of the game with any credit, got his just reward stabbing in a debut goal from Simon Russell's right wing cross.

The Harriers defence continued give the visitors an easy ride; just after the hour debutant Michael McGrath, on for the ineffective Michael Blackwood, was muscled off the ball by Lewis Hamilton who ran on through the inside right channel and fired wide of the far post.  In an attempt to get back into the game Yates changed the formation, sacrificing a defender in favour of an extra striker, Lee Thompson, and Thompson was involved with Reynolds in setting up a chance for Gareth Sheldon who blasted his shot out of the stadium.

Hurren, who had come on in the same double substitution as Thompson almost headed in when Sheldon's right wing corner was flicked on but Nikki Bull managed to tip the ball away.  Aldershot weren't done yet, though, and a counter-attack saw Kyle Matthews run through the inside-right channel before shooting wide of the far post.
