Match Report by St@tto

Harriers finally broke their duck at home and picked up a point following a dour goalless draw against old rivals Rushden & Diamonds.

Iyseden Christie was thrown straight into the team following his transfer deadline day move and was deployed on his own in attack as Mark Yates decided to go with his conservative 4-5-1 formation.  Jamie McClen also returned to the starting line-up along with Jake Sedgemore and Jonny Harkness who made his first start of the season.  In the Rushden team was former Harrier Wayne Hatswell who got a mixed reception from the Aggborough crowd.

The opening to the game was frantic and, to a certain extent, end-to-end for the first ten minutes although neither side looked like scoring.  It was not until nearly half an hour into the game that either side came close to breaking the deadlock; Hatswell crossed deep from the left and picked out Daniel Chillingworth who had finally shaken off his marker Jake Sedgemore but his weak near post header was easy for Scott Bevan to gather.  Harriers' first decent chance of the game was instigated by Stuart Whitehead who intercepted the ball in defence and carried it forward before releasing Michael Blackwood but his shot from the edge of penalty area didn't trouble Nicky Eyre too much.  On the stroke of half time Russ Penn went close with a shot on the turn that went just over the bar.

The second half started with Harriers brighter and in a two-minute spell they created enough chances to have won the game; a Sedgemore free-kick from the right found an unmarked Brian Smikle beyond the far post but he misckicked and Rushden were able to clear.  Then, a corner from the left was not cleared and McClen's cross from the right was volleyed wide at the far post by Penn who then headed wide from a Jeff Kenna cross.

At the other end Michael Rankine's pass through the inside-right channel set up Simeon Jackson who cut inside and fired in a low shot that Bevan got down well to to turn round the post for a corner.  Christie had been working hard with little reward, other than a 30th minute booking for a theatrical fall on the edge of the penalty area, and his first chance of opening his goalscoring account arrive 12 minutes from the end with a looping header that was easy for Eyre to catch.  The best chance Harriers had all night fell to Luke Reynolds moments later; but clear on goal he stumbled just as he was about to shoot and by the time he had steadied himself for another attempt Eyre was able to save.  Rankine could have won the game for Rushden late on with a shot on the turn that was straight at Bevan.
